Easy and Yummy
Super easy and yummy. We followed the directions and it turned out yummy. Granted I have nothing to compare it too. I have spent time in NOLA but, never during Mardi Gras. So going off of just that we enjoyed it. It rose perfectly and was not too sweet which I like. The filling was just enough and gave a good texture. Worth the price as it is huge.

King Cake
King cake kit is fabulous. So much easier to use this kit vs making without! Taste great! Baby included in kit.

Fantastic!!!
Not normally a fan of boxed cakes but I wanted to try this for Mardi Gras. Nothing short of outstanding. I made it by hand, not using the bag method nor the stand mixer method (I don't have one). Mixed it by hand for about 3.5 minutes til all mixed in and then followed the rest of instructions. It rose the way it was supposed to. After baking and cooling, I made the frosting. You think the frosting won't be enough, but it is. I did have to add an additional teaspoon of water to make it more spreadable. You also might not think there is enough sugar sprinkles, but it is enough. Rave reviews from my friends. It has the most incredible aroma, texture and taste. I will be ordering this again.

Best cake-takes some effort, but pays off in the end!!
We have this king cake every year for our Fat Tuesday celebration-everyone in the family loves it!! Turns out as big as the ones from the commercial bakeries in our area and tastes so much better. Please be aware this is a yeast cake and it takes some time and effort to make it-not some simple box cake mix for sure but it is sooooo worth the effort- you won’t be sorry you took the time when you taste it

If you're buying it - let's get the best results, right?
I'm giving this 4 stars - but that is because I think the directions could have been written differently. I've listed a few recommendations that I think might give a better result to other bakers. I bake a LOT, so over the years have figured out some tricks. Hope these help. The packaging is excellent and EVERYTHING, is included - yes that means the little plastic baby. The directions are easy to follow, BUT, though they say to add "softened" butter to the original dough, I would recommend you MELT and cool the butter a bit. Also, have the egg at room temperature. (You can do this by putting an egg into warm water for about 30 minutes prior to use - and this is good to do for ANY baking project.)All ingredients in baking should be at room temperature (unless they state otherwise) to ensure that the ingredients get emulsified and better incorporated in the dough. In this recipe it's especially important if you're mixing them in the plastic bag that is also included in the box. (For my family, I added a bit more melted butter, brown sugar and of course pecans to the praline filling, but that's up to your preference.)When it comes out of the oven, I quickly coat the top with a light spray (or coating) of butter. I know this is contrary to what most people do, but on any type of sweet bread/danish type of cake or roll, if you want that delicate, light top, this is how you achieve it. (Same as with a loaf of bread. If you don't want a hard crust on top - run a cube of butter over the top a few times immediately as it comes hot out of the oven. It softens the crust to make it soft and tender.)The final cake came out perfect. The taste and texture are lovely. Some reviewers said it was dry, but that's possibly because of the quality of the ingredients they used (maybe margarine instead of unsalted butter?) or they might have overworked the dough when they were rolling it out or in shaping it, and/or they over-cooked it.Here's the thing though - this cake mix is pricey. "King Cake" in essence is a coffee cake - it's made from a your basic sweet dough recipe that is filled with a brown sugar/melted butter/lightly-spiced/pecan-praline type mixture. You top it with a standard powdered sugar icing and colored sugar. Yes, it's easier to get it all in a "kit" but these are ingredients you probably have in your kitchen. Unless you have more money than space or time to go to the supermarket - do it yourself! That way you'll have some of the ingredients left over to make ANOTHER one of these delightful coffee cake creations in a few weeks!! :o)

Ordered in time to have for Mardi Gras
In the past these were sold out or didn’t arrive in time. This is an expensive cake but the kit is a complete, easy one to use. I have 2 of the babies saved from previous years. The yeast cake is light and flavorful complete with the sprinkles in Mardi Gras colors. Best not to make the glaze too thin so the sprinkles will show.

Waste of time and money.
Awful tasting. Lots of work and I would not mind if the cake tasted good. There was not enough filling and the frosting was foul tasting. Very disappointed. I baked this for our annual Fat Tuesday Party and it was not a hit at all.
