This is perfect for my needs. First of all, this item did come with instructions. One set for how to put the unit together, and another for how to lay out the plants on the water mat. As you can see from my picture, I am not using the trays that came with the unit as the pots that I purchased (Coco Fiber 3.5" square pots) fit in the bottom perfectly without the trays. I was able to squeeze in 24 plants. I got an extra bonus when I realized that the light shows beyond just the tray, so I am able to put extra plants next to the tray and they get light too!I did take the advice of another reviewer and purchased the (Nelson 50381 Premium O-Ring Style Hose Washers) which are a lot thicker and work well for holding the lid at the exact point where I want it. I also ordered extra 24 watt T5 2 ft 6400K bulbs from Hydrofarm in case these go out. I'm prepared to have my plants under the lights and growing nice roots throughout the entire winter so that I can plant them in 5 months.One thing I will say is that this is bright! It lights up the entire kitchen and living room. To help with the brightness I covered the unit with a silver thermal Mylar blanket (which turned out to be see through with the bright light)... Plus the silver reflects the light back onto the plants. Win win.

I just bought this as a Christmas gift for someone else, so I can't yet comment on how well it works. Two important updates to note about this unit. First, the O rings that had been originally used to prop up the light fixture have been replaced by clamps. At least the one I received (purchase on Nov. 28, 2016) came with these clamps. Several previously reviewers had complained about the O rings, so hopefully this upgrade will take care of that problem. The clamps seem to work well and should be easier to use. However they are plastic, so I would be careful not to over tighten. Second update to the product is that it now comes (at least mine did) with nanotech reflectors, which individually clip on to each light fixture. From watching videos online, this product originally came with a white reflective sheet that attached to the entire underside of the hood. I don't know whether the nanotech reflectors will work better, but the claim is that they direct 48% more light onto the plants. They (the 24" ones) sell for $15 each on Amazon. Overall, this unit looks very nice and was easily assembled. Just add soil, seeds and water. The only potential problem I see right now is with the inline light switch. It is of the "wheel:" type and is all plastic and feels very flimsy. Might be an unfair criticism,as it hasn't been used much and might very well last a long time. Just my impression from the way it feels. I bought this for a good friend, so if the switch fails, I will replace it with a sturdier one from the local hardware. In a few months I will be able to update this based on how well it works for her, but based on other reviewers comments it should work well.

I am thrilled with this light box. It is very well made, not cheap thin plastic at all. You have so many options too, settings for height of light and filling it with water on the bottom so the plants water themselves, etc. I am highly recommending this product. I can't imagine anyone not liking it. In the winter we will grow Herbs. Right now I have grown several plants from seed to go out into my garden. So far they have all survived and are flowering already. I love this! I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. The only problem is it didn't have instructions for assembly. But its so easy to figure out by looking at the picture that you really don't need them. Mine is on my kitchen counter. It fits perfectly there and is convenient to watch the plants grow day by day. The day after the unit arrived, I unpackaged it and found everything in good order. The assembly was easy, and the instructions clear. After I had assembled the unit, I set it aside for a couple of hours. When I returned to it, I discovered that the top portion (light assembly) had slipped, coming to rest directly atop the bottom portion (tray). I raised the light assembly and repositioned the "O" rings, hoping for a better result this second time, but to no avail--it crashed again. It seems that the supplied green "O" rings are of insufficient strength to support the weight of the light assembly, which puts me in the position of either finding a better "O" ring or coming up with a better method for holding the lamp assembly securely at any given height. For now I'm using large binder clips, which I may use permanently unless I can think of something better. I like the concept and flexibility of this Grow Garden, but the "O" rings are a major deficiency.

I just bought this unit and within an hour of setting it up had the same experience as Rebecca L, where the hood pushed the o-rings down the poles and the hood slipped down completely on top of my plants.What I ended up doing is wrapping the support poles with black electrical tape just below the lowest point I'd ever want the hood to be (for seedlings), to widen the pole there so the hood can't slip down further. I'm not sure how I'll handle it when the plants get taller and the hood won't stay higher, but I'll deal with that when I get there. At least now I can be sure it won't close completely and burn/crush my plants.The o-rings just don't stay where you put them. This boils down to a really serious design flaw. The hood is heavy enough and the o-rings slide easily enough that it just doesn't stay put. A peg system or something more stable to really lock the hood into place is really what's needed here.On the upside, this was very easy to put together, and looks like a really nice unit. I'll have to find a way around the light-height-positioning problem as my plants get taller. If not for the o-ring issue, this would easily be a 5 star review. The system is otherwise sturdy and well-built.
