12 volt power is unique; not IEEE 802.3af-compliant
If you have a 12-volt-powered system that needs to provide PoE to a remote device, I've found no alternatives to this device (PoE injectors use 48 volts and typically have an AC adapter or have the AC adapter built in -- this has a step-up converter to convert 12V to 48). It isn't IEEE 802.3af-compliant, however, meaning there is some risk that if you plug joe-random ethernet device into it, it could fry it, particularly if it's gigabit. If you've picked the hardware for both ends it could be find as long as you don't expect some random will ever plug their laptop into it or something.

A must for Wireless Site Surveys
This little gadget, together with a regular 12V backup battery (7,2 Ah) have become an inexpendable item in my line of work. With the 12V battery, it can power an Autonomous Cisco AP over -48V PoE for more than 3,5 Hours, allowing me to place test Access Points wherever I like regardless if there are any power outlets available or not.The lack of 802.11af compliance is not a problem in this case, and since it can supply -48V at 20W it can drive even more power demanding AP models like the 1252 or 3600 with expansion modules.
