Good resource
The CTB is mainly about racing, and probably should be titled The Bicycle Racer's Training Bible - which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Still, there's a bunch of great training info no matter what your cycling discipline. Most helpful to me were the annual training hours chart, and related info for writing a personal training plan. As an endurance cyclist I was able to translate much of what Friel has to say to my particular goals and objectives. CTB is a thought provoking and information packed resource to help take your training to a new level of focus and discipline.

Very useful and in-depth, but not for the casual rider.
I needed a book that would get into the complex intricacies of periodization style race training, and this book does just that. It's designed for bike racing, so I doubt others would find it useful - there's nothing about riding technique or what's the best frame materials, or how to change a tube. It is strictly about creating a year long plan that allows you to peak for the most important races of the season - maybe 2-3 times a year.Periodization is basically what most pros use to peak at the right time, say for the World Championships or the Tour de France. Of course, the rest of us amateurs are just trying to peak for the big local races, but the same concepts apply. I've read the books by Chris Carmichael and it's the same kind of thing, but I think this book is a little more in-depth, and thus maybe a little more complex. It can get dry at times, but if you're like me and want to seriously geek out on the finer points of mesocycles or anaerobic endurance, then this is the book for you.

Very comprehensive, suitable for most cyclists trying to improve their performance - much better than the e-book format.
The book is suitable for all cyclists (except maybe complete beginners) who want to systematically improve performance. I wish this book had been available years ago when I raced a bit. In those days, training meant just doing loads and loads of miles as fast as possible. Due to the fatigue that resulted from overtraining, this wasnt really very fast. Although I have no wish to compete now, I just wanted to improve my speed and especially climbing. I was a little aprehensive that it would be at too high a level for an old geezer like me,In fact this book has revitalised my rides and the results have been far better than I thought possible. I first tried the e-book version, which was very disappointing due to the format. The book is really a text book and I found the e-book format very unsuitable for frequent skipping back and forth, and for reading the detailed tables etc. I could see that the problem was with the format, not the book itself, so I bought the paperback version - much mich better.

Easy to follow book for creating your own training plan
Delivers the information on how put together your own training plan in a very easy to follow way. I used the training bible for the first time last season. I am an elite cyclist, racing for about 5 years. I'd done intervals before and trained for races, but never put together an entire season plan. This book was so helpful and took all the guess work and thinking out of the season. In November I sat down, read the book, and put together my training plan as I went which the book does a great job of laying out. I had my best season by far. Well worth the investment.

Good but not amazing
I have had this book for a few years and consult it regularly for here-and-there pointers. Some may think the title is a little pretentious...maybe?If by 'Bible' you mean a book that is a little too broad on certain subjects while too strict on certain others, sometimes confusing and open to multiple interpretations rather than an end-all guide to cycling (that book hasn't been written, yet) then you take this book in the right context and with the right frame of mind.Nonetheless, the book from this legendary coach is a must have and, together with other books, will help any cycling enthusiast to get better. Two scenarios:1-If you are starting out with cycling here is what you need to know:...your ass goes here, feet go down there and try not to fall off! There is ABSOLUTELY no point in wasting any time reading this or any book...instead go watch a movie while spinning on a trainer (fluid preferably), and develop your symmetry and athletic ability on rollers.2-If you have a season or two under you belt with some races and fun times on the bike, you may have experienced some improvement and WANT MORE, you may have noticed that everything got easier during the summer as your weight is at the lowest (that's called peaking) but now in october you feel tired and lazy and tend to want to EAT MORE (that's called off season/recovering).This book does a super job explaining these facts of life and leveraging your training year-round to move forward as an athlete.

Great Training Resource
I purchased this book to develop a personal training program and it satisfied that need very well. The first few chapters are little slow as Friel explains the science behind his program and writes to get you to buy into what he's talking about, but slowly you develop your plan based around your needs. The book has charts in the appendices that were pretty valuable, and there are additional resources on Friel's website. As a stand-alone resource this book is pretty complete with sample workouts and enough information to guide a younger racer through a few seasons. The book is geared more towards road cycling, but there is some attention given to mountain biking as well.Definitely read this book in the fall when you are preparing to your training program. You can start Friel's program at any point, but you'll want the base mileage later on, anyway!

Great!
Excellent book with excellent structured advice! Lays out a training program for anyone including the average joe public who has job wife and commitments. It made me stop overtraining and think more about what my training consists of and listening to my body. I read it every day just about and learn more and more.
