Absolutely necessary for first year architecture students.
This book was foundational in my architecture education.I had a copy that a friend bought to Europe from the MoMa bookstore back in the eighties. I lost it for another friend in the nineties and now I have a new one.

Great information, but maybe buy the newer publication.
It’s pretty great how he starts the book very fundamentally. The Author starts out with figurative “building blocks” to understand how space can be manipulated/ emphasized for its purpose. Then he proceeds to discuss these effects with a variety of historical buildings as context. I haven’t managed to finish the book yet, but i hope that it will continue to be as concise as it started. Unfortunately the typography of this book is a little too stylized for great readability - especially on aged paper. Also the book-binding glue has hardened with age so that entire page sections ended up falling out just from opening the book enough to have it lie open on my desk. All in all i’m still very satisfied with the content. I might consider going for the newer publication if the books condition gets too annoying.
