The European nightcrawler, Eisenia hortensis or Dendrobaena veneta, is a medium-small earthworm averaging about 1.5 grams each when fully grown. Generally pink-grey in color with a banded or striped appearance. The tip of the tail is often cream or pale yellow. Eisenia hortensis Usable as both a bait worm as well as a composting worm. It can be used in bins to compost material as well as be useful for bait when needed. Compared to E. fetida, E. hortensis does best in an environment with a higher carbon to nitrogen ratio. This makes it well suited to compost pits high in fibrous materials commonly known as browns. In this case, if you have more cardboard or other materials, they often can break down this material quickly. They can also be mixed with reds to help increase consumption. Nature’s Little Recyclers raise earthworms that are healthy, well fed, and happy. For so many uses, earthworms are a great part of any sustainable life. Very nice works and a lot of them
I didn’t count the worms, but it seems like a good baseball sized clump of worms. I looked through them pretty good and I saw no dead ones. The amount of dirt they ship in is not for long term storage so I added some shredded newspaper, some peat moss, and some leaves from my garden so they could spread out a bit more. I was horrified thinking they would arrive dead because USPS too their sweet time with delivery and I live in Buffalo NY. It seemed from their tracking that they sat outside for 2-3 days on a truck. The worms were packaged well, had paper around them and even two gel packs. I think the gel packs insulated them and saved them. I would buy again. Next year for ice fishing I’ll buy them earlier and use these for the entire season.

arrived on time and 100% healthy
You will find a review I wrote in May on this same item. In May we had a heat wave and half the worms were dead, but I did not fault the shipper. This time it was cold and they were 100% alive - I test this by pouring them out on a newspaper and coming back a few hours later - all of them had crawled off into the dirt. I use them for both casting for fertilizer and food for my pet turtle - these guys are great!!

These nightcrawlers arrive in great shape and took to my raised garden beds right away.
Very healthy nightcrawlers and they were really in great shape when arriving. They seem to have adapted to my raised vegetable beds and are growing well.
