Excellent book about the legends of King Arthur.
Excellent book about the legends of King Arthur as collected and told by Sir Thomas Mallory, who himself has a great story. Translated by Keith Baines (the "Classic Rendition") . An Introduction by Robert Graves and Afterword by Christopher Cannon give great context.Arrived on time in good condition.

For a beginner in the Arthurian legends,
This book is wonderful. I'd never had so much as a hint of understanding about these tales until I came across Heather Dale. Her songs sparked my interest and I immediately went in search of articles and explanations. I came across this book and ordered it first thing. I haven't been able to put it down, and though I'm just barely in the middle of "The book of Sir Tristram of Lyoness." I've become obsessed. Just recently ordered another book on it, and read articles as often as I can. Though I'll admit the books not for everyone, as it can be a little bland to some. There was once or twice my eyes were reading and my mind was elsewhere, though that's not all that uncommon. Final word: It's a wonderful book, and if you're into these types of things, I highly suggest you get it. (:

Great read, do not be intimidated.
This book was recommended to me by a friend who had always wanted to finish reading it herself. I enjoyed growing up a lot of the stories of Arthur and this book was a real surprise. It's written almost like a detailed playbook of events. Very very well done and easy to read. For some reason people seemed intimidated by the size of the book and its being translated. Great book, still re-read on occasion.

... labeled "The Death of Arthur" which makes the ending easy to guess
The book is predictable due to the fact it is labeled "The Death of Arthur" which makes the ending easy to guess. However, the path to this end is a wonderful and thrilling experience.

Arthurian Legend for the Masses
Baines, a poet, creates what I'd consider to be the definitive modern translation of Mallory's work for the casual reader. If someone were approaching Arthurian legend for the first time, this version would be an excellent place to start. Eminently readable, with an accessible style and nice flow--a helpful glossary helps to keep all the characters straight.

Glib and repetitive
The ink and paper material are cheap and smudge easily. Margins are painfully small if you like to annotate. The content of the book itself, Mallory, is dull, glib, and repetitive. I love reading and have a deep appreciation for books like Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the like. I found the writing to be amateurish, but perhaps that's suitable for the time. A rather significant action will be glided over in a single line without any description of how characters internalize or emotionally respond. This is common for a lot of old epics but there's substance there to be discerned between the lines in the Iliad and Beowulf; I don't think there's much substance here. One must use the imagination not to picture what Mallory is conveying, but to inject all the substance of details that Mallory utterly fails to present as a writer. I think this collection of stories is better broken up individually and rewritten as illustrated children's bedtime stories than read as a whole.I would love to be convinced that this is a great or even a half-decent book worth the time, but I feel that would be like convincing me that dogs are cats. There are far better things worth reading but if you're an obsessed fan of this particular fiction, this will scratch the itch I suppose...

King Arthur Retold
This retelling of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur by Keith Baines is very good indeed. I've tried reading the original a few times and always been held back by the level and complexity of the language. However, this rendition by Baines was like a breath of fresh air. I would highly recommend this book to others who, like me, have struggled with the original text.I hope you find my review helpful.

Essential Fantasy Reading.
This is an epic. I have to admit that I am totally a bias reviewer because I have loved the Knights of the Round Table and King Arthur since grade school. The Disney movie was good, but is really negligible compared to this masterpiece.
