I would have given this item 3 stars (or lower), but given the price it would have been churlish to do so. Some people might find it handy to keep in a top pocket for reference, but the words and phrases are so basic that I cannot see it being very useful as it gives no real indication of pronounciation and even if the person you are trying to converse with can understand what you are asking or trying to say, how would you be able to understand their reply? That said, for the cost of just over £1 and the size being able to fit in a shirt top pocket, I guess it is better than having nothing to help make enquiries in a foreign language.

I didn't realise that I had actually received this card in the post until my border collie gleefully brought it up to me, to show me his new 'toy'. I was absolutely horrified initially - he's chewed up his fair share of credit cards - but I soon discovered that the card was completely intact. In fact I can still read it perfectly despite a few dents from his teeth. So not only is this full of helpful words that allow you to construct useful sentences in german, but it is obviously made of some pretty hard stuff as well! Plus a convenient size for travel. Love it!

I purchased this for our weekend away in Paris for myself and my 11 year old son to use. It is a really useful size, is strong and won't bend or tear whilst in use or in a wallet or purse. I thought there would just be words on it but it is usefully laid out so that you can create sentences to get you through the day if you're brave enough to try! Wordings include getting around, being polite, ordering drinks and food and getting directions etc. My son is looking forward to trying it out! Will be on hand in my purse for those times of need while away! Would recommend purchases.UPDATE 7/7 - thought I would give an update following our trip and how useful the card was. My son, mother and I all referred to it and within 5 minutes of arriving off the Eurostar, I used it to put a sentence together to buy three train tickets to our destination - and we got what we needed and ended up in the right place! Result! We also used it in restaurants to order drinks etc. I received a free card too for Spain after I gave feedback and looking forward to trying that out too. Lots better than a big phrase book where you don't use half the words or sentences and light and easy to use. Would still recommend. :)

Such a brilliantly simple idea. I was fed up, having bought a Greek phrase book only to find the translation was literally in Greek ie alphabet, which I could not read and no idea of phonetics. The phrase "it's all Greek to me" suddenly come to life!! I then spotted these cards and decided to buy a full set as little stocking presents for my globe trotting sons as well as the Greek cards I needed for my holiday. Credit card sized and laminated surface so wipe able and will fit into wallet. They give lots of useful words and phrases in phonetics. Syllables which need to be stressed are in capitals as getting this right makes all the difference between being understood and getting blank looks.

Or-ray-eh! That's how the word 'beautiful' would be said phonetically. This is how the card works, although I guess that locals would be stumped if you showed them the card instead of being brave and actually speaking to them! A clever idea, with clear graphics, although it might be even more helpful to have a part 2 included, just to expand the conversation a little .I love the practicality of having it credit card sized & waterproof.

Bought this for a friend, and having already learnt Dutch myself from my (southern) Dutch husband, some of the pronunciations seems to be ever-so-slightly off - But that could just be down to Southerners having a different accent, and they have written it with an accent considered more normal in the north/the capital.Arrived very quickly, and came in a hard 'Do not bend' envelope, to keep it safe.Very pleased :)

Although many people will speak English and there is a lot of crossover (excuse me is pardon) I found this handy and will be looking to get the rest at some point. That it appears to be phonetically spelling it out makes it a lot easier to identify things, the 1-10 & days of the week are useful plus I didn't realise when I bought it but it is printed on both sidesUPDATEI used these in April of this year and it really was handy, within a day of bring abroad id already used a card to speak to people, just ordered the rest of the set, a replacement French (as someone I borrowed it to found it so useful I told them to keep it :D ) & a Dutch card 👍
