While its ultimate historical origin is in the simple begging bowls used by the Buddha and his monastic followers, Oryoki developed in Japan into a precise, efficient, and profound practice of meditation in eating. In the 1970's, having been supplicated three times, Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi gave the transmission of Soto Zen Oryoki practice to Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche who in turn transmitted it to his western students. Oryoki continues to be practiced in Trungpa Rinpoche's Shambhala community during dathuns (month-long group meditation retreats) and other intensive meditation programs. For more on the history of Oryoki, its use in the Shambhala community, and particularly on the liturgy which Trungpa Rinpoche joined to the Oryoki practice, see Oryoki and the Oryoki Chant by Lama Tony Duff. Included in this set are four black plastic nesting bowls with wooden spoon, setsu stick or cleaner, and chopsticks. The largest bowl measures 2 - 3/8" high and 4 - 7/8" diameter across the top. Imported from Thailand. Oryoki Cloths made by Samadhi Cushions sold separately.
