Great textbook for the experienced Director
This is the second textbook I have bought from author Stephen Katz. The first one was excellent for the beginning director. Very simple and laid out nicely for the film directing enthusiast. This second edition was all that I expected it to be. Katz goes into camera cinematics and choreography of large scenes and shots filled with lots of people. If you didn't get the basics in the first edition you'll be in the dark with this one. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because it was everything I expected it to be. No surprises or extra pages. I think he'll be coming out with another one in the not so distant future!

Great resource for "intermediate" academic level directing and cinematography
This is a great guide because it contains lots of easy shot framing guides, and by lots, I mean LOTS.Well organized, so it's easy to flip through or use the table of contents if you're in a rush. Whether you need a inspiring tracking shot to help plan your next storyboard, or need to quickly figure out on set why certain blocking isn't working with your lighting, it's both comprehensive enough and easily accessible to serve both functions, as both textbook and quick reference list.

Must read for every budding film maker
This is an amazing piece of work that addresses the staging aspect of a film very comprehensively. Most of the books treat this subject with a lot of words, but Steven Katz has chosen to explain the nuances of staging in a visual form - demystifying the entire art behind it. If you are budding movie maker - read this before you stage your first shot.

Well described, but not a great deal to do with motion.
If you know anything about blocking for a shoot, this is a bit basic. However, if you keep getting confused when your peers talk about "the line", or a "mid 2 shot", please for goodness sake buy this and don't go on a set until you understand it.Hmm, might gift it to a couple of "directors" I've done freebies for...

Your second chance, first time round
If you are about to produce and direct the feature film you have written, read this, particularly the interviews, then you might get your "second chance to make that movie when the picture is shot". And, if you don't, it will be tragically obvious in the film's bonus material.

Overrated and irrelevant
The first book that I read about Cinema was Shot by Shot when I was 11, and I bought this and I was hopping that Steven D.Katz can surprise me again.Hopelessly its not even relevant, The books is less about Staging scenes and more about many other stuff like scheduling and …I got really surprised and I don't recommend it at all.
