wow
I haven’t been able to be interested enough in a book to read more than 3-4 pages at a time. This book broke the cycle. Loved the older heroine

Lighthearted and funny!
I read this book in one day…lighthearted, funny! I had few laugh out loud moments. Yeah for Mona and Ben!

Laugh out loud characters
What a fun group of friends, horrific soon-to-be ex-husband and all around great book. From Mona's fantasies to her better-in-real-life moments, you'll find yourself laughing.

Entertaining characters
Romance writer Mona Berman never expected her own life to become a bad romance novel cliché. In her mind, her marriage had been perfect, ideal. It took her husband leaving her for a younger, thinner, blonder, French woman for her to realize that not only was her husband not the devoted man she thought he was, but she wasn't happy, either. Now she is faced with writing a new book about love when it's the last thing on her mind, and moving on from relationship disaster while raising three teenage girls.Better Off Without Him is filled with entertaining characters. Each one was unique and had their own story that lent an air of reality to the novel. Mona was very naïve about her relationship in the beginning, but it was believable because she was such an independent and self-sufficient woman she wouldn't realize how much her husband never helped and even neglected her. The other characters each had aspects that kept them from being too stereotypical as well. One element of this book that I thought was interesting was Ernst's combination of Mona's romance writing life and her real life. Every once in a while (usually when around an attractive man) Mona's thoughts would wander into novel mode, describing the scene as she would in one of her books. It added a slightly silly, but fun aspect to the book. When Mona begins practice dating (dating only men she knows so she can get ready for dating a stranger), it doesn't go as smoothly as she had hoped. Mona ends up with a purely physical relationship with her neighbor, Doug, and a string of awful, but very funny dates with other islanders. I enjoyed the terrible dates, and laughed my way through those chapters. I was actually rather surprised that there were no sex scenes in this book, given the Mona's job and the type of book it was, however that doesn't mean it was a PG type story by any means. There was a fair amount of profanity in this book, which I don't care for, and even without sex scenes there was frequent talk about sex. With the language and the sexual references, this book definitely makes it onto my "No way would I let my teenage nieces read this" list. I also felt like the language detracted from the story in some ways. Even though Mona was angry about what had happened, the foul language didn't seem to suit her character, and she really could have expressed herself without the profanity just as easily and more effectively. The sexual references seemed to be a substitute for not having any sex scenes, but for me this didn't fit well, either. I understand not wanting to write sex scenes, but using explicit conversations as a substitute wasn't genuine. I would have preferred Ernst had kept a consistent outlook on the sex aspect of the book. I felt like she could have done without the language and suggestive conversations and still told her story effectively.Overall, Better Off Without Him was an entertaining book. I enjoyed the characters and watching Mona progress after her husband left her. I did expect from the very beginning that Mona would end up with a particular character that she did in fact end up with, so that was somewhat predictable, but I was still pleased with the ending.Would I recommend this book? Not without warnings about the language and sexual references. This was a good casual read. There were some editing errors, but nothing significant that distracted from the book. It was well written with good characters, and an entertaining read.Who would I recommend this book to? Definitely adults. It's a tough one to place with a specific reader group. Hard core romance readers will be expecting sex. Some women's lit readers may not care for the focus on sex, which sometimes seemed to dominate over Mona's personal change. The language may be a problem for others. This book is for readers who want a romance novel that is somewhat tame with a good story line and fun characters.

Funny and Refreshing
Hurrah, a romance with slightly more real people, and without yawn-inducing page after page of supposedly erotic members and pearls of delight. Thank Goodness! I really enjoyed this read, which was a refreshing change, having an older protagonist, yet still encompassing the hilarious teen mentality with her three daughters. This book takes you exactly where it should, you hate the cheating husband, you feel for the discarded wife, you sympathise with the day to day dramas of motherhood, and you root for whichever guy you personally think she should end up with, while it happily keeps you guessing.I loved the writing style, finding it extremely witty, and genuinely chuckle out loud in one or two places, with quite a few snorts in others. Yes, there were a few typos that could have been caught, but self publishing often means the author has to be all things, writer, editor, copy editor, typesetter, and proof reader. There is a reason these people are highly trained, and we can never compensate fully for their loss. I do believe that the new talent opened up to us through self publishing is well worth coping with a few errors. Anyone who has written so much as a long email knows the writer is the worst proof reader, our brains too familiar with what should be there to see what actually is there. If you're engrossed enough in the story, you can overlook and forgive. It was a format that has been done many times, but felt that Dee Ernst added her own unique perspective to it, along with the twist that the main character is an author of steamy romances, a career that goes haywire when her love life does. This a fun, fast paced, funny read perfect for many clichéd scenarios, on the beach, poolside, curled up in front of a roaring fire on a winter's day, snuggled on the sofa on a dark, lonely night, or in bed, on a night your brain couldn't cope with mystery and intrigue, criminal profiling, or intense legal action, when you can't take any more supernatural and paranormal, when the teen perspective has fried your synapses, or when blood and guts don't appeal. This is a grown up book, from an adult perspective, with adult themes, it's clever and witty, without being pretentiously so, and you don't have to hunt endlessly for a plot amongst honeyed folds and throbbing desires. Moving it from archive back onto my kindle as I write.

A very nostalgic experience!
The Fairport Convention lived within 200 yards of my house when this recording was made and my wife taught Dave Swarbrick's son at the JMI school. We attended the charity gig on the hillside opposite the pub in Little Hadham mentioned in the notes. Two of the songs on the disc refer specifically to the Angel pub and the river Ash which featured prominently in my early and middle years. So this disc has to be a favourite with me together with its predecessor, Full House, which contains most of the songs played at the gig mentioned above. The recording and digital re-mastering is excellent and, of course, I love the notes, which do,however, contain one minor error - their landlord's name was Hodgkinson, not Hutchinson, as claimed by Simon!

The Bonny Black Hare.
This song, racy lyrics aside, is just fabulous. It is redolent of leafy spring out on the land. I was living in The Bush when I listened to it most, on a battery-powered tape recorder. Wonderful track; it`s the reason I bought the seedee.
