He graduated from Whitman College and also attended the Chicago Art Institute. Norling once taught classes on perspective at the Burnley Art School in Seattle. He also worked as a freelance illustrator and fine artist. Commissioned to paint murals on many public buildings, he also illustrated 14 children's books.
