An engaging tale for less confident teen readers...
I've been reading a lot of these Barrington Stoke novels recently, with some lower ability readers aged 13-14. "Getting Away With It" is among the best of their recent novels pitched at this readership - accessible, well written and capable of sustaining a young reader's attention. It's slightly less 'street' than some of its literary stablemates, despite revolving around a joyriding incident at the start of the novel, and I'd also say it was more likely to appeal to both boys and girls than some other books in the series. Like many other novels aimed at lower ability readers, it's rather short, however... even reading with a lad whose reading ability is well below his 14 years, we managed to polish it off in one sitting. A very enjoyable and engaging read, though, with a sensitively explored moral dilemma at its heart.
