The best APS-C portrait lens.
Sigma has been on a roll as of late. Their trifecta or "trinity" of the 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm -- all 1.4 -- are the sharpest lenses that are available for the Sony APS-C E-Mount line of cameras.I did some comparison shots with the Sigma 56mm 1.4 on my Sony A6400 versus the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 on my Sony A7III and it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between the two. The equivalent focal length of the 56mm on APS-C is nearly 85mm and the Sigma serves as an 85mm portrait lens on the A6000 series of cameras.Having the 1.4 aperture really bridges the gap between the two camera sensor sizes. Bokeh is nearly identical and sharpness is the same as well. However, where the sigma 56mm 1.4 is MUCH smaller and focuses much closer than any full frame 85mm portrait lens. It can almost be used as a pseudo-macro lens for general-shooting subjects, such as flowers and food, but you still won't be able to get as close as a true dedicated macro lens, but the functionality is there. While the Batis is stabilized (and the A7III also features in-body stabilization), the Sigma does not suffer too much due to its lack of stabilization because of its bright 1.4 aperture. At an 85mm equivalent, having stabilization is nice (and you can get it in-body on the A6500), but it is less important than with longer focal lengths.Overall, this is my favorite portrait lens for the A6400 and with this combo, I can actually leave the bigger and heavier A7III / Batis 85mm combo at home and have a lighter set up.The Sigma 56mm has excellent autofocus speed, is quiet, and incredibly sharp.I also HIGHLY recommend the other Sigma APS-C E-Mount lenses, especially the 16mm 1.4.
