Magnetizing Made Simple – Handy Little Tool for Any Toolbox
Magnetizing Made Simple – Handy Little Tool for Any Toolbox The Wiha 40010 Magnetizer/Demagnetizer is one of those deceptively simple gadgets that ends up being used far more often than you’d expect. I grabbed it to help with small electronics and household repair projects, and it’s quickly become a staple in my toolbox. What I like most is how straightforward it is. Need your screwdriver tip to hold onto tiny screws? Just a quick pass through the magnetizer side and you’re set. When you don’t want a magnetic tip—like when working near sensitive electronics—the demagnetizer side does the job. It’s small enough to toss into a pocket or a corner of a toolbox, but it feels solid and well-made, like most Wiha tools I’ve used. The magnetizing function works instantly and reliably, and the charge seems to last a good while. The demagnetizing function can be a little less intuitive at first, but with a slow pull through the notched side, it works as intended. There are no moving parts, no batteries, and nothing to break—just a block of durable plastic with a strong internal magnet system. Something to keep in mind: the size might be smaller than you’d expect from the photos, but that’s actually a plus for portability. Also, if you’re trying to demagnetize something very strongly magnetized, it might take a couple of passes. Bottom line: A cheap, compact tool that pays for itself the first time it keeps a screw from falling into a hard-to-reach spot. For anyone who works with hand tools—even just occasionally—this is a smart little addition to the kit.

No instructions
It does work well, just make sure you do it correctly! It's very easy to do, but it assumes you need no instructions - which is untrue. Do it wrong and you'll feel cheated - send it back - be angry - kick the dog - yell at the kids - and make everyone in the house glad when you finally go back to work... So here it is, do it right and you'll be pleased. With the finesse of a highly skilled surgeon, about to make a killing on another disgusting gallbladder, 1. Slowly, very cautiously, with great pomp and circumstance, drama, and an eye for detail, Insert the desired tool to be magnetized, into the POSITIVE side of the magnetizer. This should be a relatively protracted process lasting as close as possible, 9.35471 seconds and not exceeding 11.64528 seconds. The second part is even more important than part one. So pay very close attention. Follow every point to the utmost, as if your life depended upon your success. 2. Go to the kitchen, refresh yourself with 6.5 ounces of chilled water to the temperature of 37.3 degrees. Consume quickly, but deliberately, focusing on the task ahead. Dry hands thoroughly, fold towel and place in the laundry. Slowly, with handle of the screwdriver (or other device to be magnetized) at an angle of 46 degrees from the horizontal plane, withdraw the tool over a period of precisely 12.32764 seconds, holding your breath the entire time and standing on your left foot, with your right foot exactly 4 inches off the ground. Take a deep breath 4 times, exhaling slowly and methodically. Thank the Lord for another successful procedure gone well, without complications or casualties. For those of you who prefer less precision, do the following. Slowly insert the desired tool to be magnetized into the positive side over a few seconds, then withdraw the tool over the same amount of time. Chances are good that you'll have the amount of magnetization you're looking for. If not, do it again! Repeat as needed. Enjoy!! And thank the Lord that the process wasn't any more difficult than it really is...

Great Magnetizer/OK Demagnetizer
This is a simple, inexpensive device that really works well, within limitations. The magnetizer works great. Slowly inserting a tool (made of a metal capable of being magnetized) into the + chamber and then slowly retracting it readily magnetizes it. Works great when you want screwdrivers to grab onto screws. Demagnetizing a tool, however, is more difficult. To thoroughly demagnetize a tool, you probably need an electromagnetic degaussing coil. This much simpler device is OK, but a bit tricky to use. As others have noted, there are no instructions included. The - chamber has a series of steps, and it's not obvious what their purpose is. I contacted Wiha tech support, and they responded promptly (two service reps sent e-mail). Below are their instructions. It is important to note that the tool tip can be so strongly magnetic that the screw or other part it touches can itself become magnetized. So to test the demagnetizer, you need to test the demagnetized tip on a fresh (previously unmagnetized) part; otherwise, if the part itself is magnetized, you would incorrectly conclude that the demagnetizer didn't work. From Wiha tech support: "You put the screwdriver blade slowly in and out of the + side to magnetize and slowly in and out of the - side to demagnetize. If you are having trouble demagnetizing put the blade in slowly at the top of the demagnetizing side, walk it down the steps and then remove. Magnetism transfers so you need to be careful to not keep magnetized and demagnetized items together. Parts under 1" in length or 1/8" diameter may not demagnetize. (Do not use a paper clip to check if a tool is demagnetized, because of the size once it is magnetized it cannot be demagnetized and transfers the magnetism back to the other tool.) Also if you are trying to demag an item with larger mass it will take repeated attempts to demag it."

Great Magnetizer
Magnetizer part works great. Demagnetizer doesn't work.

Science - not magic - a must have in every toolkit
For the $7 or so that this costs, it's a must have. There's plenty of reviews so I'll just say the following about the few that complain like crazy about the demagnetizer -- someone mentioned this in a review, but most reviews don't -- the demagnetizer won't remove strong permanant magnetic fields. That means any nice tools with a strong permanent magnet will not be affected. This device works on paramagnetism. And it is not a large device either. So it works better on small tools, and those tools generally have to be either really weakly magnetic (like a really bad magnet) or just not magnetic by their design. If the tool is small enough and fits those criteria, then this device will work. Paramagnetism works by inducing a magnetic field around "non-natural" materials that become temporarily magnetic when the strong force of a set of magnets creates a universally distributed/directional field. If you just leave it be, depending on how weak the tool is, it will demagnetize on it's own -- again, no magic here, just science :) As far as the demagnetizer, well I suspect many people are trying to use it to demagnetize all their tools, including ones with good, permanent ferromagnetic properties. In that case, you won't do much with this thing - it is not meant to disrupt or 'compete' with a permanant magnet. The demagnetization is harder than the magnetization by design; it is usualy harder to remove a magnetic field especially if you do it right after inducing one with a device this small. However, it does the trick if the tool was completely "non-magnetic" before magnetizing. But for $7, who can complain? This is a really good device to have and it works better on small tools. It does the trick well especially on ESD-safe tools (smaller ones) that are purposely designed to be as non-magnetic as possible with the materials (and without external forces like this magnetizer!) -- and for ESD-safe devices I have had consistent success magnetizing and demagnetizing as needed.

No more fighting with screws as you try to insert and remove them
This little device should have been added to my toolbox YEARS ago. It's so simple, yet completely effective. When you use a screwdriver that doesn't have magnetized tips, screws won't stay in place as you try to insert them...and they fall off when your remove them. I got so tired of dealing with it. Just stick the tip of the screwdriver (or drill bit driver) into the + side of this device, wiggle it around in the magnetized area for a few seconds and you are done! Now, when you put a screw onto the end of your screwdriver, it stays in place on it's own and wont fall off when you are inserting it. Just as valuable, when you remove a screw, it stays on the end of the screwdriver and won't fall down into whatever you are working on. It will generally stay magnetized during your project, but just use it again when the magnetic pull starts to wear off. I haven't needed the de-magnetize option (-) but it's there if you do. This thing is cheap, easy to use and a "must have" in your toolbox. Wish I would have bought it years ago.

Excelente producto
