When all has been tried, yet Justice is not in sight, It is then right to pick up the sword, It is then right to fight. Written in exquisite Persian verse, the Zafarnama was a defiant message composed by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, and addressed to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, following a series of fierce battles between the imperial forces and Sikh warriors. With wisdom and honesty, the Guru indicts the emperor for the moral and spiritual bankruptcy of his empire. These 111 stirring stanzas, which form the core of the Guru's spiritual philosophy, highlight his deep understanding of the true nature of God and Creation. In this evocative translation, Navtej Sarna brings to life the valiant voice of Guru Gobind Singh and the power of his poetic genius in a passionate disavowal of tyranny that remains ever relevant. Review: Good. - Good. Review: This is not just a letter - The Zafarnama is not merely a complaint but a declaration of spiritual sovereignty. Guru Gobind Singh Ji asserts the moral superiority of truth and justice over tyranny and deceit. He reminds Aurangzeb that while he may have succeeded through treachery, true victory belongs to those who adhere to righteousness. The letter is suffused with an unyielding spirit of defiance, as Guru Ji proclaims that the path of truth will ultimately triumph over falsehood.

Wonderful
What a book, indeed! Received earlier today, began reading in the afternoon, and found it unputdownable; finished it by late evening. Want to salute Navtej Sarna for writing a brilliant introduction and also for an extremely lucid and vibrant translation. Am filled with so much admiration and reverence for Sikh gurus. Am keen to read more literary works by Guru Gobind Singh who must be known not just for his exemplary valour but also for his literary achievements. Am greatly motivated to make a visit to Gurudwara Sheeshganj, Gurudwara Rakabganj and Anandpur Sahib, and of course Golden Temple to be in the vicinity of the halo of history and legend of these incredible places.

Get ready to be amazed!
words fall short talking about Guru Gobind Singh Ji! its tough to encompass the literary beauty of his writings especially with knowing his small but sacred life of utmost character & dedication towards humanity! this letter written to Aurangzeb highlighting his brutal ways which may have helped him rule a lland as big as India but in truth, its an illusion as such heinous crimes carry no victory in the house of God or nature which everyone is bound to end up into! it tries to explain the futility of his actions & what a true muslim should be in his character in virtue and not in appearance or rituals The words are even true today as hardly anyone respects and honors Aurangzeb today! a forgotten king whereas Guru Gobind Singh may have lost his four sons, his parents but his legacy lives on today in practically every corner in the world & the west is realising the story of this little known Saint everyday!

Excellent translation of a priceless work of art
I always wanted to know what the Zafarnama entailed other than knowing that it was a letter written in Persian script to Emperor Aurangzeb by the 10th Sikh Guru. Of course, many Sikhs cannot read or write Persian in the modern day; I therefore got this book from Amazon in its hardcover form to ascertain if its contents would do the modern day reader any justice in bringing the soul of this epic poetry. Not only does the translation appear to be easy to understand, but it is also written in rhymes. The author has really done a fabulous job in making this work available to the World. One does not need to be well versed in poetry to understand the praises and reproaches Guru Gobind Singh Ji wrote to make the Emperor aware of his oppression and misuse of power, who was guided only by his selfish ego to proclaim his version of a cohesive Islamic Empire. I strongly recommend this book to any avid reader with interest in history, especially Sikh history of the 17th century AD. A must for all young readers curious to learn what events took place during the Sikh retaliation against Mughal forces and why the Sikhs had to fight for their freedom and that of other faiths to give shape to modern India's diaspora. Beautifully done!
