Works great, especially if used with other media.
I got this for my 60-gallon freshwater tank after it had developed one of those green water cases of floating algae, causing it to resemble an artificial pond in my bedroom. I did not, however, use it right away, seeing as I had already succeeded in clearing up the green soupy fog by using Acurel Phosphate padding that I bought from my local fish supply store (Algae cannot survive without phosphates). After all, I did not want to jump the gun by adding too much media to my filter at once. After hearing that algae can thrive off of nitrates as well, I decided to go ahead, and stick this into the bottom basket of my Penn Plax Cascade 1000 canister filter, just above the coarse and medium foam media. After consistently replacing the pouch every week or so, I've got to say that it is a fantastic supplement to all the other media I use (see my review for the Penn Plax Cascade 1000 filter). Even a few weeks after changing 25% of the water (I do so every 3 weeks), my nitrate levels are kept to a bare minimum, and the water itself stays as clear as can be.Overall, this is an excellent product, and I highly recommend it to any aquarium enthusiast.

works EXACTLY as ADVERTISED
after reading several reviews i had to post this. Algone is a great product and WILL reduce your nitrate levels and HELP clean your water. that being said; if your nitrate levels are off the charts (higher than 80ppm), this is not a cure all for you and there are most likely other problems with your tank and/or set up. this could be over-population (reduce fish count or get a bigger tank), overfeeding, or lack of ANY water changes. look, no one LOVES to do water changes, but even with algone use you WILL need to do some water changes. do you want to reuse your same bath water every day? no ... neither do your fish.if you are getting a thick coating of "goo" and/or slime on your algone package, this means your water is disgusting and needs to be changed - algone will NOT fix this. To aide in lowering nitrates, algone removes a lot of waste and other pollutants like proteins, carbohydrates and fats. if these are present in LARGE quantities, you will get slime build up. you need to change your water and clean your tank. you may also need to clean/change your filter more frequently OR your current filter is not efficient enough to keep up with the bio-load in your tank.also you will need to discontinue bacteria supplements while algone is working as this will make things worse and prevent the situation from getting any better.make sure you have adequate O2 levels in your tank and surface agitationdepending on what junk is in your tank, the pouch can develop an odor.you will need to replace this every week until nitrates are under control and water is cleaner.**all of this information can be found on the algone website, with the product, and all over fish-forums on the internet.** this is one of the top products on the market for what it does. please READ the instructions and follow carefully good advice from those who have had success with this before. do not bash a product because you are not using it correctly as it will deter others who DO need help from using it and solving their problems.

Not perfect but pretty good product
I used this product several times to lower some really high nitrate levels in my tank. It does a pretty good job. The only thing I don't like is that you have to replace it every 5 days which means shutting off my canister filter and opening it up and replacing it. That's the only down side to it.

Item did not arrive at first
My item did not arrive at first. I contacted customer support, and was sent a new one right away. The product works great. Nitrate levels went down super quickly.

Dangerous product
I have a good cycled tank, but I had same problem with "Algone" - in 3 days the pouche has been covered in a translucent like gooey substance that would flake off into the tank making the water even more cloudy. I got it like surprise! Bad thing - no any product notifications about posibility of such issues.. All fishes were stressed. Then I stopped using Algone and immideately made 15% water change. It is looks much better now! In 24 hours after I stopped using the Algone, the tank has been crystal clear (actually, I had same problem in the second tank too). Be aware it's quite dangerous product! I used it in canister and HOB filters. Result was same. My 3rd tank was without "Algone" and there are not any problems.

Can’t Tell If It Works
For all practical purposes, this is worthless. If anything, it made my water get a yellowish tone.

Appears to be working (updated)
I held off on Algone for a long time, but decided to give it a try. Nitrates were a problem of mine, but after a week I see a difference in the tests. Interesting...noticed my filter lid was pushed higher, and looking I found the Algone bag had 'inflated' after a week. It also had slime on the bottom and that's the first I've seen of that. I'm thinking that's good.? Back to nitrates, I've used cut to fit sheets and no real difference I can see. Also use Purigen but nitrates still high (although it helps with the rest). Think I'll be sticking with Algone.--UPDATE--I still have algae, but most gets caught in the filter medium. Currently have many juvenile mystery snails that can use it...but water stays clean and nitrates level is good. If you look at the condition of the bag and the slime on it, you know it's catching a lot of junk. I'll continue to use it and replace when my HOB filter pops its lid.

Don't leave this in your filter once nitrate is controlled!
These packs are huge! I had a super bad nitrate problem, was killing all my new fish. I put a pack in my filter for a couple of weeks, then my water stayed a bit cloudy. But it reduced my nitrate to about zero. I use a bottom vaccum once or twice a week, and only feed them a little once a day. Just saying get educated on nitrate control, before all your fish die of it!
