French Touch [DVD Video]

I learned of this soprano through her "Doll Song" (from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann), which appears on YouTube. She's a doll like you've NEVER seen before and will never see elsewhere! Petibon's take on the role defies belief. Despite her incredibly unorthodox approach to much that she sings and acts, her command of coloratura technique is genuinely impressive. She possesses an extended range and reaches great heights effortlessly. The staging on this DVD is off-beat--as are the accompaniments--but in balance, this different kind of "recital" is fun to watch, even though I was looking for more coloratura dazzlers. Knowing what I know now, would I have purchased this DVD? Yes, particularly to share with my concert-loving friends--to watch their reactions!

I was able to get this to play on my computer but not my DVD player as it is formatted in PAL (European) rather than NTSC (North American and Japanese) even though it it listed as "all zones" and I had to set my Windows Media Player to "France - Region 2" for it to work. As far as the actual DVD itself is concerned, you get a wonderful French vocal recital by one of the most exciting, beautiful, talented, exquisitely voiced singers who can also act all the parts. The musical accompaniment is minimal but adequtate, mostly cello and piano. The video quality (that I can make out on my computer) seems excellent.

Très agréable recital de Patricia Petibon qui mêle des airs classiques à des mélodies populaires dans le respect de la musique mais avec un humour et une simplicité qui forcent le respect. Bravo l'artiste !

Cette artiste m'avait surpris dans son interpretation des :"Contes d'offmann" enregistrer en Suisse, mais là elle nous montre une facette innatendue de son répertoire. Qui à dit que les soprano était tristes?

このDVDはフランスの製品で、リージョン・フリーですが、テレビへの出力方式がPalなので、日本で一般に売られているDVDプレーヤーでは見えません。（パソコンで見るなら、出力方式に関係なく見える。）ただし、実際には、あまり積極的に公表していないが、一部、パイオニアなどで、Palを日本のテレビのNTSCに変換し、見えるようにしてくれる機種もあるので、自分で調べてください。これはプティボンのCD,"French Touch"発売にともなうリサイタルの模様を記録したDVDです。ただ、曲目はかならずしもCDと一致せず、CDにあったオペラの有名曲はだいぶカットされ、プーランクやサティなど、いかにもフランス的なエスプリの効いた作曲家の曲が中心になっています。ここでの彼女はシャレたレヴューの歌姫か、一篇のドラマのように歌を披露するシャンソン歌手のようで、そのキュートな魅力にイチコロです。ただ、フランス語がさっぱりなわたしとしては、せめて英語の字幕つきだったら、もっと彼女の歌の世界を理解できるのにと、自分の学力のなさを棚上げにして思ってしまいました。
