An intimate and personal journal of hope and discovery
God wants to love us, communicate with us and give us joy. This book is profoundly helpful to anyone who wants to go deeper and broader in their walk with God. An easy read with video supplements. Doing it is harder.

Helped Me to Abide in Christ
For mature audiences only. Your average secular person would read this book and think John Eldredge is 100% nuts. I would say he's 10% nuts. Eh, who isn't? The other 90% was a blessing and an answer to my prayer on how to abide in Jesus.John shared his prayer journal from one year of his life to role model what a personal relationship with God and Jesus look like. I picked up some great tips on how to abide in Jesus (the theme God keeps bringing up in MY walk). Thanks, John! Here they are in order of helpfulness to my walk:1. Before I add more projects to my Outlook task list, pray and ask God, "should I do this?" Not all good works need to be accomplished by Yours Truly. Love this advice. It kills 2 birds with one stone. Listening for God's voice every time I start a project triggers more "abiding". Better time management.2. When I do ask God about something, "ask the next question." For example, if I sense that God is leading me to take on a project, talk with Him about how to do it. For me, the effect of this book is constant conversations and listening to God throughout my day. Pray without ceasing! The words John hears from God rang true to my own experience of Him.3. Appreciate the gifts God gives me every day that are not on "my list". There are certain things I pray for all the time (since Jesus told me to ask persistently for those things I believe are God's will). But sometimes this persistence makes me blind to the other neat little things God gives. Like the stars last night. Or "little people" hugs from our youngest congregants. Our Father just loves to give us good gifts and show us His love.4. Take spiritual warfare seriously. I don't buy into all his beliefs - this is where the 10% nutty part came in. He thinks objects can be conduits of evil or we have to say all these long prayers about every little thing. But, I do recognize some force that works mischievously against my harmony with God. I especially like what he said about being careful with "your agreements" (code for beliefs). So I wrote a sermon about that this week!5. God wants to give you JOY and REST. It's OK to take a break from God's work and just enjoy good things. In fact, when he asked God "should I do this?" the answer was often "no, take a break and do that thing that brings you joy!" Like writing this review :)John is a highly introspective person, thus his walk is a little different from mine. I would even venture to say he's excessively introspective and maybe a little paranoid (that "daily prayer" at the end of the book would kill my relationship with God fast). But the beautiful thing is that God walks with each of us right where we are and each of us will have a different kind of relationship. Part of the reason John can give this kind of spiritual advice is because he is so internally aware.

Great Read & Easy to Absorb during Crisis
Im wring this for a fam member whos encarcerated for a framed setup of a hunting accident that the DA in Kingman Az is trying to say is attempted murder. We are praying that the truth be seen & comes out bt Mohave County has many situations they let go due to the various arenas of mobs & now the government has making up to do in bookings so they are grabbing anyone that is not "normal" as in special needs, physically disabled, mentally handicapped, even high functioning spectrum disorders, seizures and planting evidence to make them look like they are criminals & paying people to help. I got this book for my adult brother who is very intelligent & highly functioning spectrum disorder but social skills are a little slower in learning...he also has a horrible time with changes! He said this book gave him a new perspective on why God put him in the situation he is in & how he can listen to God beyond the noise of the Jail he has been in for almost 2yrs...so much for a fair & quick trial! I have been stalked, had records stolen, & the DA try to get people that never knew my brother to testify against him & say they knew him when they didn't. It turns out that the Judges in Arizona have ties to Russian Intelligence & they have been planning this as a retaliation for a long time because we are a military family.

Most helpful book in your OWN relationship with God
This book was a game changer for me. The author does a great job of sharing his own “prayer journal,” with you as the reader. From his prayers and experiences with them he helps you to understand where God was talking to him during these particular situations. During this process you slowly start learning how to apply the same teachings/ learning process to your own walk of faith. Navigating the Lords voice is not the most easy concept. However, it is extremely important in navigating our daily life. This book truly helps make that navigation a little easier by providing the “GPS system.” You still of course have to talk to God about your start and finish place. But it’s so nice to hear him direct me along the way.I have recommended this book to so many people. Not only as an “easy read,” but also as an extremely helpful book. Prayers it provides you with direction too.

inspirational and touching
I liked the real life examples and the author sharing in a vulnerable way how he worked through them. Very genuine.

Description Does Not Do This Book Justice
Someone recommended this book to me. After reading the description of it online, I was not too excited about it...but, ordered it anyway. I am so glad I did! I do not know how to put into words about how well written it is. I was apprehensive because I did not really want to read about someone's stories per se. But, the way the author shares....everything resonates. He also connects his sharing to scripture, which I did not expect but prefer and value. I actually like the structure of having no formal chapters, which I did not anticipate. The book is chunked into small sections, though. I only read a few pages (one or two little sections) per day because they are jam packed in my opinion. I want to soak it all in, reflect, and treasure the new perspectives I am receiving. I normally do not like to recommend books....I get bombarded all of the time by book recommendations by friends,etc...but, I have already bought a copy for a gift and recommended it those close to me. I have only read about 40 pages of it so far and felt compelled to share a review. I have highlighted a ton already and desire to re-read it so that I more deeply internalize aspects. I cannot wait to keep reading... I highly recommend.

an insight look into a pilgrim’s life
Where most John’s book answers the ‘how we could be a better Christian question?’ This book answers ‘what kind of life does a good Christian leads’

A very practical book that is grounded in reality I devoured it & recommend it fully!
I heard about this book through the authors podcasts. Earlier books of his I would mate as a 3-4 star read but this book is VERY different. I've read a lot over the years on developing a 2 way communicative relationship with God and this tops them all! A very practical book that is grounded in reality I embraced it fully. The author is challenging whilst encouraging at the same time, I love his honesty! I would recommend this book highly to anyone and everyone no matter what stage of growth they are in the faith. YOU will not be disappointed #recommended

So practical
I may have commented on this book before as this is not my first time of reading it. I took John's advice! It is rich; full of wisdom that comes from practical experience with our Father who loves us. I can not recommend it enough. May God bless those who embark on the record of a year in John Eldredge's walk with God.

Excellent.
Loved each and every page!! Experience the true personality of God in a realistic, daily walk- Father, friend, comforter, financial advisor and even joker; He longs for a deep relationship with us. This book brings that to life.

life changing
This is one of a few books that have influenced me with a life-changing impact. This is not a theological study book that can leave you feeling inadequate but, rather, an inspirational journey revealing one man's heart and walk with God. John Eldridge writes with a searing honesty that I can relate to so I have been left with a hunger and determination to go deeper with God for myself. There is helpful teaching thrown in along the way, but it is primarily an honest sharing of his life and heart

A really practical book
Another Eldridge classic, which is both practical and inspiring. Having been a Christian for a number of years, I've never been sure when God has spoken to me. This book has taught me that yes God has been speaking to me in sometimes the most obvious ways, but I just haven't had my eyes and ears focussed in the right direction. I'm no longer deaf towards God.
