absolutely no support
I bought this scanner about a year ago and have been happy with it. Unfortunately I bought a new computer running Vista. Microtek didn't release Vista drivers until this month and they don't work! But you won't get any help from Microtek. The only support they seem to offer is by email and so far have been completely worthless. I'm left dedicating an old PC running XP to the scanner. For this kind of money I expect to be able to talk to technical support and get some help. I won't buy another scanner from them, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else.

beautiful product but not friendly
Pictures that I have scanned with 1800f Microtek is nothing but astonishing. It closed my dark room all together. However software kills the machine. Its like a Roll-Royce being run by a Toyota Tercel 1983 engine! You have to turn on and off to get recognized then.. God forbids if you upgrade computer to Apple, neither Mac nor Scanner recognize each other then you have to Emulate using Fusion 5...Then after all things finally work you recognize for some never ever known reason Scanner always remains in Flattop picture scanning and has lost its capacity to scan negatives and positive. Done! Why did I close my Dark room? Lets reopen it. Why never is able to resolve this glitch because nobody cares, they only want to sell not fix. Throw away a beautiful thing to buy the same thing to break down again. No sorry I will not buy or consume anymore.

Does not support Mac OS upgrades past 10.6
Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner
I have owned this item for several years and have had good results from its use. They have always developed drivers for the upgraded Mac operating systems to include 10.6 Snow Leopard. That is why I had a $350.00 refurbish overhaul (new lights ,maintenance, etc.) done to it several months ago. That has all changed now. They no longer intend to support the 9800XL with any further Mac system drivers. Instead they have produced a new 9800 XL PLUS LED Scanner with Mac drivers and are telling their previous customers " TOO BAD WE GOT YOUR $1500.00 + BUT ARE NOT GOING TO DEVELOP DRIVERS FOR FURTHER OS CHANGES ". This from a company that boast Apple compatibility on their web site.[...] Purely misleading. When I spoke to them they told me that was for their current products. I just don't understand, if they can develop drivers for a newer version of this scanner, why can't they develop drivers for their previous version of the scanner? I urge any owner of this product to file a complaint where ever they can concerning Microtek decision not to provide upgrade support for there products. After all, these are not consumer line products, but pro grade devices with a pro grade cost. If not for the support problems with this product, I would have given a 4 or 5 star rating. A Great Scanner for Many Uses!
I used a Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL from 2003 until this weekend, when a near miss lightning strike put it down. It grew with me over three generations of PC Computers and three generations of Windows operating systems. Always it was a loyal servant, making very high quality scanned images. Extreme resolution was never essential - 300 DPI was normally good enough although I sometimes used 600 DPI. The color rendition has always exceeded my expectations - it has always been better than any of my digital cameras. This scanner has some 3-d capability - I used it regularly to scan paintings, flat art, and American Indian jewelry - it was particularly useful for fetish necklaces and older silverwork that has some patina and is not mirror-like in finish. The software provided by Microtek has always worked with Photoshop Elements and Corel Photopaint, allowing sharing of the scanner over the network. In the past year, I found it more convenient to have a long USB cable and plug it into whichever of my three computers needed access to a scanner. After reading the specifications and user reviews for all the large-format scanners available today from Amazon.com, I decided that the Microtek 9800XL is the only one that I could trust to meet my requirements. A new unit of the same model is due for delivery shortly. When I have used my new scanner for a few weeks, I shall update this review to incorporate my experience with the new scanner.

Spectacular scanner
What can I say? This is the best scanner I've ever used. I'm a graphic artist, so I needed a large scanner to do the job, and this baby does just that. Color and black and white turn out equally fantastic.

The product exactly matches the description. Very satisfied with my purchase.
With a large 12-by-17-inch scan bed, this tabloid-size scanner brings high performance and affordable extra-large scanning for reflective media to the corporate user or graphic designer. The ScanMaker 9800XL's high-resolution 21,360-element CCD allows for greater enlargement of scanned images without loss of detail, and the scanner's three interfaces of USB/FireWire/SCSI-2 provide maximum flexibility.
The 9800XL also features a 3.7 maximum optical density with multiple sampling technology for true-to-life representation and purer image output. A powerful accessories package for film scanning is available as an attractive option to boost your productivity even further.
