Tierra y Fuego Terra Santa Barbara Malibu ceramic tiles are glazed and decorated by hand using a technique called “cuerda seca” or “dry cord”. This technique of decorating ceramic tiles can be traced back to Persia during the XIV century. It implicates that every single drop of colored glaze is carefully applied by the artist using a bulb syringe. In most cases a single tile may have up to ten different colors, and at the same time a mix of matte and gloss glazes. Therefore, extreme attention to detail is required to create a unique and exquisite tile of unparalleled beauty. Typically, Malibu tiles display rich, and intricate Spanish-Moorish motifs evoking a bold, romantic, and dramatic style. Characteristics of Malibu Tile: 1) Nominal measurements of 4¼ x 4¼ in. and ¼ in. thick. Due to handmade nature, tiles may vary by up to 1/8 in. 2) May be slightly concave or not perfectly flat and squared. 3) Avoid high moist areas in all matte tiles. If used in moist areas, apply a penetrating sealer which forms an invisible barrier that is resistant to moisture and stains while allowing vapor to escape. 4) Industry standard recommends to add on 5-10% additional to the tile needed to account for waste, special cuts, or other unforeseen problems. 5) Lot variation in size and color may be present. 6) There is no guarantee that tiles ordered as add-ons will match those from the original orders. This is an inherent characteristic in all ceramic tiles, and particularly in all handcrafted tiles. 7) Santa Barbara tiles are NOT frost proof. SUITABLE TILE USAGE FOR SANTA BARBARA TILE: All residential and commercial wall applications, bathroom walls, countertops, showers, back splashes, fireplaces, counters, and light-use flooring; as accents flooring, or as a border to define an area. Pool chemicals may negatively impact glazes. Not slip resistant. Outdoor use is subject to climate.
