Are the bands adjustable in resistance?

They are adjustable in length. When they are adjusted shorter, yes there is more resistance.

How do you keep the platform connected to the ground when in use?

four 100lb dumbbells, placed on the middle portion of the sides. I'm 160lb 5'6 and it doesn't lift off the ground at all.
