Windsurf ~ Coastlines

Lazy Days, Crazy Nights
I bought this album on an utter whim, having never heard Windsurf, knowing about them only through product description. The sound is a bit different than what I initially expected, which was more ambient textures and less driving beats (and less bass, for that matter). Instead, these tracks play more like baroque versions of early-90's racing video game music (games with titles like California Cruisin' and Cruisin' California). What I will say is that I very much anticipate hearing Windsurf when, if there is a when, they have more experience and a larger budget to work with. As good as "Coastlines" is, I feel it is haunted by the ghosts of Windsurf's future potential. Maybe next time we'll hear a little more Steely Dan and a little less Depeche Mode?

The beat goes up in the air
Unlike the two individual artists, Windsurf goes all the way off the floor and becomes simply free of any constraints. At times it tries to hold you, and in other moments it seems to let go. Giving the impression of an album that builds, the farther it is allowed to leave.Disco...this time, is given the backseat for the drive.
