A really poor dvd! Awful dubbing and a really poor buy. Please - do not buy this dvd as it is rubbish - even for a child. Terrible story lines and very badly told! Not really in English either!! AOKR

A great family film

In a time of magic in medieval Europe, a new Christmas Legend is born. A grief-stricken king, mourning the untimely death of his Queen and beloved wife at Christmas, curses the Christmas Star in his despair, causing it to disappear from the night sky, resulting in a pall of gloom to descend on his kingdom. A year later his young daughter, Princess Golden Hair, runs into the deep forest, in bleak mid-winter, in search of the Christmas Star. Unbeknownst to anyone, she is waylaid by a treacherous Count who covets the throne. He schemes to remove the King's sole heir by enslaving her to a band of ruthless thieves, where she forgets her heritage and reverts to a scullery maid named Sonya. Nearly ten years pass with the inconsolable king unable to find her. A Legend says he will die heirless and the Christmas Star will be gone forever if the balance is not restored by the 10th anniversary. He remains blind to the scheming treachery of nobles and charlatans in his court. Toss in the diabolical magic of an evil witch, and you have a real fairytale. Our little heroine manages to escape her nasty captors in the nick of time. With the aid of forest Brownies ( you know, the Little People, and no, not elves) who team her up with a magical talking bear (of course). She resumes her search, first to the abode of Father Christmas, who holds the secret of locating the Christmas Star. Through many adventures, misadventures and near destruction at the hands of an assortment of evil-doers, her task seems nearly hopeless, one that only the Power of Love can overcome.

I don't understand the low ratings by some reviewers. This is a "fantasy" movie intended for children and the young at heart. It promotes wholesome family values which are obviously politically incorrect for some people. Themes include honesty, generosity, personal-sacrifice, faith, hope and a steadfast spirit. This is the type of movie that American filmmakers have long forgotten how to make. Yes, it's a foreign (Norwegian) production, filmed in Norway and the Czech Republic. The dubbing is very well done and does not distract from the film. The young actress, Vilde Marie Zeiner, who plays Sonja, is a natural who never overacts, and is a cute little kid. There is a good amount of Norwegian cultural elements throughout which I found educational as well as entertaining - the scenes with the Gnomes are a prime example. The music by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra is outstanding!Don't hesitate to get this film. It's the type of Christmas movie that is heartwarming anytime of the year! Ignore the naysayers!

I ordered this after seeing the trailer. It is a beautifully filmed story, lots of fun special effects and great settings. The young heroine is a great role model for young girls. The dubbed voices, although not to everyone's taste, almost add to the sense of it being a magical tale from another place. Well worth watching with or without young companions.

I think this a wonderful movie and I also feel the dubbing is done very well and not a distraction.. I also agree with those who don't understand why anyone would put this movie down. It gives a message ....the kind we need more of today. Actors are great. And story is certainly not the same old same old kind of Christmas movies they make nowadays...I would highly recommend!! And I am far from being a child and I totally loved this story.
