The booklet contains only a listing of performers for each piece, and date and venue for the performance along with the original cover art shown. The box is a heavy cardboard container, and each disc sleeve is also cardboard with original cover art on the front and track listing on the rear of the cover. It's actually a very nice package and well done, especially for the price. At the current bargain pricing, this is surely worth picking up for anyone interested in Wagner and/or these particular performances or artists. As time goes by and the pricing fluctuates, the desirability of this box set will vary. Referring to the links above will help facilitate a decision regarding whether or not the investment might be worthwhile.

An Appealing Wagnerian Starter Set--but price matters!
I bought this set in December 2014, when the price was an amazingly low $15.79 for 40 CDs. At that price-level, the cost seemed a no-brainer. Now, at $62.90, I'm not so sure. What makes this an excellent starter set, IMHO, is the Janowski Ring, combined with the various solo and duet albums by leading artists, and the orchestral selections by Szell and Stokowski. I have been listening to classical music for about 40 years, but I've never quite come to terms with Wagner, and in particular with the Ring. To me it seems awfully LONG, and there's so much TALK separating the exciting set pieces. The Janowski Ring helps a lot for a listener like me. The digital sound helps one hear the orchestra clearly, the tempos are brisk, and the voices in general are strong, fresh, and easy to hear clearly. The effect is very bracing and one often feels on the edge of one's seat, even in the talky bits.Meanwhile, the "extras" with solo albums by the greats of the past like Melchior, Flagstad and Farrell, and by more recent and talented singers such as Hofmann and Meier provide further points of entry. And for those who are really starting to get their feet wet, the orchestral excerpts by Szell, Stoky, and Maazel can offer appealing bridges into the larger works.Meanwhile, more veteran collecters could fill in some gaps in their collections at very low cost. So, at the $15.79 I paid for it, I would give this set five stars.BUT what about at its present price of $63? At that price, I'd knock my review down to 4 stars and recommend considering other alternatives. It seems to me that the core attraction is Janowski's Ring--worth that $15.79 all by itself. But amazon is now selling that Ring in a deluxe edition for Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen. This deluxe set, with what one reviewer describes as "posh packaging," sells from Amazon for $27.77 and new from third parties for as little as $17. The packaging in the "Great Recordings" issue is adequate, but quite bare bones. So if the chief appeal for you is the Janowski Ring, then it might be a good idea to go for the stand-alone Janowski. Maybe you can then pick up the extras on an as-needed basis. Anyway, it's your call, but--as Phil in his excellent review points out-- it does go to show that price matters.

All operas included here have been chosen from excellent to legendary performances
I will not comment on the individual performances, but rather focus on the contents and the presentation. All operas included here have been chosen from excellent to legendary performances. All feature excellent to great soloists. Plus, RCA has walked the extra mile - or even two - by including an extra Walküre Act one as well as excellent récitals by the likes of Peter Hoffmann, Gösta Winbergh, Waltraud Meier, Flagstad, Traubel and Melchior, as well as orchestral compilations by Szell and Stokowski and - why not? a disc of piano-4 hands transcriptions. All that is missing is a complete Tristan. Strangely enough, none is to be found in the RCA or Sony vaults, so we don't have one here, although the various recitals do offer the complete Love Duet, and of course the Prelude and Liebestod, as well as Tristan's Act 3 solos. Beautiful presentation, with original cover art on each cardboard sleeve. A steal at the price. I paid mine 20$ canadian. The whole thing is worth many times that much !

This Sony Wagner box set attempts to be different.
Sony Classics publishers of this set, have also released sets such as Toscanini's complete RCA Recordings, Living Stereo, Bernstein Edition Concerto & Orchestral works, plus the companion to this Wagner set, Giuseppe Verdi, Great recordings, with much the same lay out. (SEE MY REVIEWS BELOW) Naturally, the title great recordings is debatable. We all have our own idea on what are great recordings, which can cause heated discussions. For example, I think the 1955 2nd cycle Gotterdammerung with Windgassen and Martha Modl, conducted by Keilberth is a great Recording, as I do the Rome Furtwangler Wagner Ring Cycle with Modl and Suthaus. Others may disagree, and think that the 1950 La Scala, Milan, Ring cycle conducted by Furtwangler with Flagstad is truely great, or the 1955 Keilberth first cycle with Varnay is the best of all. What is meant by the title is that this Wagner set is different, and attempts to give us an insight into the Composers music. The set is divided into complete operas, with excerpts from Tristan und Isolde with Traubel and Melchoir, Orchestral works and Arias from Tannhauser. Also Opera excerpts and Arias, plus Orchestral works and Transcription. The box contains singers such as Flagstad, Melchoir and Traubel and Varnay, plus singers of the modern era, Norman, Meier, Hofmann, Winbergh and Kollo with conductors such as Von Karajan, Leinsdorf, Keilberth, Rodzinski, Busch, Szell, Stokowski, Bernstein, Maazel and James Levine. The smallish tough cardboard box, has Wagner's portrait on two sides. On the other sides are the operas, singers and conductors. The lid exactly one third of the box comes off. The colouring is Crimson. Inside the box is another box where the sleeves are placed. The sleeves have the original pictures on the front with singers and Orchestra; on the Crimson spine in yellow lettering is the operas name, Acts, Orchestra and conductor and at the end the CD number. At the back on a crimson background, in yellow lettering, the opera, track numbers and arias, plus singers, conductor and orchestra. The CDs are a warm red, with the opera, Act, Wagner CD number at the bottom. There is no mention any where that this entire box set has been remastered, a very few have stereo or, digital, or remastered on the sleeves. Listening to the Flagstad recording I own, that is in this box as well, it is ADD, so I can deduce that some discs were Mono, others stereo and DDD. The publishers should put a great big sign on the box, about what has been done technically to the CDs. There is a booklet but it only has CD number, opera, track number and arias singers and their roles, plus orchestra and conductor. So I shall give as much information that I can. There are no translations or CD ROM. However, there is a book sold by Brit Amazon called "The Book of 101 libretto's". (ED) J.M. Murray: 1996. Blackdog & Leventhal publishers, New York.DER FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER: (1994).Morris, Voight, Heppener, Rootering, Groves and Birgitta Svenden. Met Orchestra cond Levine. The singers are at their best, but the conducting is slow, only at the end does Levine quicken his tempi. My favourite CD of this opera is recorded in 1955, a Testament recording, with Uhde and Varnay, Bayreuth Orchestra cond Keilberth. A great set.LOHENGRIN: (1965) Konya, Amara, Dooley, Gorr, Hines, Boston Symphony Orchestra Cond Erich Leinsdorf. He brings out much beauty in the score. The Act 1 prelude is deeply felt. Sandor Konya well experienced in the role gives a fine account. Amara and Gorr are inside their roles. A recording of interest is Leinsdorf's 1943 Met version of this opera with Melchior, Varnay, Thorborg, Sved and Cordon.DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NURNBERG:(LIVE. First performance in the rebuilt Nationaltheatre, Munich, November, 23, 1964). Wiener, Hotter, Kusche, Metternich, Thomas, Watson. Bayerisches Staatsoper cond Keilberth understands the music and brings out the beauty of the score. This version is committedly sung, an ensemble effort, beautifully played, Clare Watson as Eva singing has flair, Jess Thomas's Walter is attractively sung, Kothner is good, but Otto Wiener as Hans Sachs is not having a good night.THE RING Cycle Staatskapelle Dresden, cond Marek Janowski. DIGITAL.(1980-1983) This cycle alone is worth the price of this box set. The music flows, the tempi is swift, emotional and enables the singers to give of their best. It was recorded in the then East Germany, behind the so called Iron Curtain. Often suggested that newcomers to the Ring cycle hear this recording first. However,in my opinion it is one of the great classy Rings.DAS RHEINGOLD: Theo Adam, Schreier, Nimsgern, Vogel, Salminen, Minton, Wenkel, Lucia Popp's voice as a Rhinemaiden is very clear and stands out, Uta Priew, Hanna Schwarz are the other maidens; she was Fricka in the Great DVD Ring Cycle by Chereau and Boulez.DIE WALKURE: Jerusalem, Moll, Adam, Norman, Altmeyer, Minton, The Walkuren: Eva-Maria Bundschuh was Gutrune in the Kupfer Ring, conducted by Barenboim- Bayreuth Festspiel Orch on DVD/Bluray. Studer is often found in Wagner roles. Ortrun Wenkel, Erda in the Boulez Ring, Anne Gjevang, Waltraute in the DVD Dutch Ring staged by de Nederlandse Opera. Jesse Norman, Sieglinde. Norman and Siegmund Jerusalem are a dream team, with Moll singing Hunding with his distinctive Bass baritone lyrical voice. He is Gurnemanz in Levines Met Parsifal. Altmeyer was young when she recorded her Brunnhilde, and she sounds it, passionate, emotional with her distinctive warm voice, after all this is what Wagner wanted a young Brunnhilde. She was Brunnhilde in her late 40's in the 1999 Dutch Ring, and that is my favourite Ring out of the 11 DVD's and Blurays I own. What a Brunnhilde, I play this Ring cycle a lot. Wotan Theo Adam took the same part in the 1976 Bohm Ring cycle, Bayreuth.SIEGFRIED: Kollo, Schreier, Adam, Nimsgern, Winkel, Altmeyer, Sharp. One of the best Siegfrieds around. Janowski captures the lyrical side and fun in this opera, he is helped by tremendous singing from all those in the main roles. Altmeyer is one of the few dramatic soprano's who can really sing the last act duet with passion, the others are Modl in the Rome Ring cycle conducted By Furtwangler and Nilsson in the Solti Siegfried.GOTTERDAMMERUNG: Kollo, Nocker, Nimsgern, Salminen, Altmeyer, Sharp, Wenkel, Gjevang, Lucia Popp, Uta Priew, Hanna Schwarz. I would like to point out that Australian Marjorie Lawrence was 28 when she sung Brunnhilde and rode a horse on stage before she was ill with polio. She was about the same age as Altmeyer who was 29 when she sung in Die Walkure in this recording. Altmeyer has intensity and a sexy voice, this was what was said of Martha Modl. This is one of the best of the Gotterdammerung's around along with Solti's version.I thought I would add a few CDs of the past that are not in this set, which may interest you. EMI. Die Walkure Act 1. Lotte Lehmann, Melchior, List. VPO cond Bruno Walter. Teldec Bayreuth 1936, Maria Muller, Max Lorenz and Franz Volker. Lohengrin, Die Walkure and Siegfried. Also, Martha Modl The queen of drama in opera. (10 CDs read my review)PARSIVAL: (Recorded by Austrian Radio (ORF), April 1, 1961, Restored from a private radio recording.) LIVE. Vienna Staatsoper cond Von Karajan. Waechter, Hotter, Uhl, Berry Hongen, Ludwig, Flowermaidens, Gundula Janowitz, Hilde Guden, Anneliese Rothenberger- a dream team of flower maidens. Sound wise it is OK, but it should have been remastered. However, the performances are good. Waechter Amfortas and Hans Hotter as Gurnemanz are as you would expect, at the top of their form. Parsifal Fritz Uhl is not so bad, he was Tristan in Solti's recording of Tristan und Isolde. Walter Berry is very good as Klingsor. Elisabeth Hongen is a bit best her best as Kundry, which she shared with Christa Ludwig who was younger. Ludwig sings the famous Ich sah das Kind. Von Karajan captures the spirituality of the piece. Farrell was placed by New York critics in the direct line to the legendary Prima Donnas as Lilli Lehmann, Lilian Nordica and Rosa Ponselle. When she sung Louis Armstrongs kind of music she said "if you have a love for music, all good music appeals to you. カイベルトのマイスタージンガーを聴きたくて買いました。
多くの人は、ヤノフスキの指環を安価に手にいれたくて買うのでしょうけれども、私は、個人的にカイベルトが好きで、彼のマイスタージンガーを聴きたくて買いました。これだけの値段で、この内容が聴けるのは、はっきり言って驚きです。ワーグナーの生誕200年を記念して、色々と出ましたが、これだけ安価に、ボリュームたっぷりなのは、これだけではないかと思います。買って良かった。
