Great Starting Place
This book is a great overview of the nature-based, gender-based philosophy and the practical applications of that philosophy. I like it particularly because most of Michael Gurian's books deal with a subset of the material. This one is perhaps the best first book to read if you are interested in the subject. There are other books by Gurian and by Leonard Sax which work the brain science harder. There are several excellent books which Gurian has co-written which are designed to be classroom strategy and implementation books. There are quite a few by Gurian and others which highlight and analyze the difficult plight of boys in current society. There many books, more in the public eye, on the challenges before girls today. This is a fascinating and important area of study with much depth of material for those inclined to pursue it. But regardless of depth of interest, this book is a fine place to begin.

it's helpful
This book is a tough read. Author is a little...what's the word...indulgent. Sometimes it reads like a textbook, which I can handle, and sometimes he goes off on something that I'm just not altogether interested in. However, I understand my 9 yo son a lot better than I did before I read it. No joke. It explains a lot - maybe I should have known some of this already - but the differences in boys' & girls' brains are important to know. Can't pretend they're not important. Anyone who ignores it (like I used to do) is wasting a lot of time and all involved are probably really frustrated.

Like when eating fish: eat the meat, leave out the bones.
Some good information about the inherent, natural differences the boys and girls as distinct, while also working on building and equal learning environment based on those distinctions. Some topics are left more open for kids than is actually helpful, and some topics attributed to a misleading cause. Otherwise, a helpful resource for parents and teachers to develop in ways that fit and include both boys and girls.

Not recommended for homeschooling parents
Dr Gurian takes the science and gives practical advice for the classroom. The book is primarily broken into these sections: preschool and kinder; elementary; middle school; high school. I think this book is helpful for teachers but not so much for homeschooling parents as most of the info is for a class or school setting.

Not Helpful
I was really hoping to learn something from this book that would improve my teaching, or at least my parenting, but the characteristics of kids that the authors present were so inconsistent with anything I've seen in my classrooms of elementary and middle school kids over the last 18 years that it was as if they were describing almost the opposite of my real-world experience. It's a long book (and not cheap), but I read most of it, all the while hoping in vain that I would find something that rings true. There was no connection to valid scientific research, but instead it seemed like they picked out the few selective examples that support the theory and ignoring everything else. I wish I could get the time back that I spent reading it.

Every parent should know about this book
I would say that this book is kind of a guide to knowing the ways to parent your kid. This tells us that how hows boys are different from girls and how to bring the kids in a better ,positive guidance. How can we handle the kids without we getting into their nerve and viceversa.Thank youSathish kalathil

Amazing
I loved this book. Like a good novel, I just couldn't put it down!!!I have given it 5 stars because it is interesting, relevant, not patronising and offers real insight.I am a teacher and KS1 manager, in my fifth year, and this has inspired and motivated me in a way which no other book has been able to before. It is now dog-eared, covered in highlighting and notes in the margin and will be a permanent feature of reference in my classroom from now on. I have always considered myself to have quite a good relationship with the boys in my class, but after reading this book, I feel I can take this to a whole new level and really understand them in a way I never could before.Suitable for all who work with children, in any setting, and parents-especially mothers wanting to understand their sons on a deeper level.

Initially a good read...
I bought this ebook for my Kindle to use as reading material for my research project on Gender which is a part of my Foundation Degree in Early Years Development and Learning. This was a very good book. I was very impressed by it and it had plenty of useful information.However....The file then crashed. It took a long time to sort out including time on the phone to Kindle support, and i was not able to use it within my assignments as i was told the file was corrupt.Very disappointed.
