Thorough and Insightful
Excellent concise bio of Spurgeon

Extremely Detailed
This is probably the best biography of Charles Spurgeon you will find. It outlines every aspect of his life. The book covers more details regarding his life, charities, school, and health than it does his beliefs; therefore, I would only recommend this book to someone who is interested in knowing every detail about Spurgeon the man. An excellent read. Highly recommend.

Delivers Spurgeon
I bought the book after listening to a church sermon where the speaker noted that Charles Spurgeon was someone that inspired him. I'm always looking for good books - so "bit" without knowing anything about Charles Spurgeon. The book is just well written and a reasonably easy read. I like how it logically segments out Spurgeon's life and just stays at the right level of detail - for me. The overall book tenor is favorable to Charles Spurgeon - but - seems like it should be - the man accomplished much.

A Great Introduction to the Prince of Preachers
This was my first book on Charles Spurgeon, and I have to say that it sparked my interest so much that I proceeded to his 4 volume Autobiography! Dallimore writes very well, breaks down the material into short, manageable chapters, and liberally uses the words of Spurgeon himself to give the reader a good snapshot of the preacher. One of the things I like about this book is that while Dallimore gives us a good clear picture of Spurgeon the man, he also provides the reader a faithful glimpse of Spurgeon the servant of God. I could not help but be inspired by the work of God in this man. This is a biography of Charles Spurgeon, but it is ultimately about the incredible local and global work of Christ through one of His humble servants. If you are looking for a short, first book on Spurgeon, then this is the one. It is concise, accurate, faithful to the man himself, and inspirational.

An Inspiration to Modern Christians
I used this book for a seminary class. In addition to what I learned about Spurgeon in this book, my favorite part was that about Mrs. Lavinia Bartlett in the chapter “Daily Life in the Great Church”. It’s a must read!

Start Here But Don't End Here
Dallimore's "New Biography" is a fast paced easy read. It has a satisfying but non-exciting flavor to it. I am quite glad that I have started with this book. It seemed like the 2 vol. autobiography (which I will certainly move onto next)was too much of a commitment for a first biography and Ian Murray's "Forgotten Spurgeon" was too specific. So Dallimore's work certainly has a place among the many biographies of the Prince of Preachers.I appreciated the even survey of the book. He doesn't drill down too much into any period of his life but you don't feel like he skipped anything. You simply feel curious... curious for more sermons and journal entries and I found myself especially curious as to what made this man tick internally. If I may make a criticism of a biographical survey, I found his chapter on Spurgeon's character to be dissatisfying. There was meager discussion of Spurgeon's struggle with depression, something I'm extremely interested in. I was also slightly disappointed by the author's change in tone when he discussed Spurgeon's tobacco and alcohol preferences... though the selected quotes are quite memorable.I was also pleased that it was, as one expects from The Banner of Truth, a good hearty paperback that won't yellow or dissolve in 5-10 years. By the way, its cheaper over at the Westminster online bookstore. All in all, it was a good book, but not one I'll read again.

Un-Put-Down-Able!
I got this book for Christmas because I needed to read it for an essay for Bible college. It is really good. I was honestly not expecting it to be so inspiring, because I have read very few biographies about Christians. But this biography has made me want to read others and to glean great encouragement from the lives of my fellow heirs with Christ. This one, written by Dallimore, is very well-balanced. Dallimore has sought to be an accurate scholar concerning the man he is writing about. Thus, he reveals Spurgeon's true greatness and many, many strengths, and he does not hide Spurgeon's (few) weaknesses either. It is written very simply and a decent reader can plough through it easily enough. It is paragraphed frequently, so that you can read a little bit here and there. In what seemed to me like only a few pages, this is a great introductory study of the life of C. H. Spurgeon. I feel like I know him better now. And since my passion is also pastoral ministry, this was one man I could not afford to bypass in my studies. I am very grateful for his life and for this documentary on his life, especially with respect to his preaching. His devotional life was a massive encouragement. It is also an eye-opener concerning the times in which Spurgeon lived.I'll finish with a little tiny quote which I wrote myself as I was reading this remarkable book:"Preacher/Pastor: This is the man you need to study! Both his life, and the doctrine he believed in - closely!"10/10

Great Overview of a Godly Man
I have heard much about the great man that was Spurgeon, but have always been put off by the amount of material written on him! Not knowing where to start.Dallimore provides an excellent overview of his life, that is both inspiring and challenging. He lived a fascinating life, that all Christians would benefit from reading about. If you are looking for a short and accessible introduction to Charles Spurgeon then don't hesitate to read this book.
