Review An overview of radiation damage mechanisms and the techniques used to determine the impact of radiation on various nuclear materials About the Author Philip Edmondson is a Senior Staff Scientist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory where his area of research includes the study of the radiation effects in novel materials for nuclear energy applications including next-generation metallic materials, pseudo-metallic systems such as MAX phases, and nanostructured ceramics. Prior to joining ORNL, he was an EPSRC Fellow in Nuclear Materials at the University of Oxford, where he studied the microstructural characterisation of materials using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-filtered TEM, scanning TEM (STEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and atom probe tomography. He currently serves as the Associate Editor of Nuclear Materials and Energy journal, and was the guest co-Editor on Journal of Nuclear Materials Special Edition on “Radiation Damage and Development of New Nuclear Materials” published in February 2015.
