what is the maxium capacity/size of 2.5" hdd's will this unit support?

I am happily running with 2 x 4TB 2.5" HDDS (Samsung/Seagate Spinpoint) in RAID1. Works perfectly. A second unit with a pair of the 2TB variant in the same configuration. The drives are extracted from the Samsung M3 Slimline 4 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive and Seagate 2TB alternative respectively as not currently available bare / OEM.

Question 2

do the drives have to be set up in raid or can they run independently?

Hello Shirley, the enclosure supports RAID 0, 1, Spanning, and JBOD, RAID 0 (Striped Disks)  - RAID 1 (Mirrored Disks)  - JBOD - (Just a Bunch of Disks)  - BIG (Spanning or Concatenation)  .... so you can select whatever you prefer. 1. does this raid enclosure have any software? 2. how would i know if a drive fails or if one drive is out of sync with the other?

The raid setup is performed using a switch inside the case. There is no software. Errors are managed by the drive electronics. I do not have it set for redundancy only JBOD with 2x4TB used daily with no issues for the last 18 months transporting data between sites - but below is from Amazon USA where somebody has tested the RAID redundancy - Hope this helps.

This little enclosure takes up to 15mm 2.5 drives , though the specs state , only tested with 2TB per bay , It runs 4tb per bay with no issues, That is raid 0 tested worked fine striped with a fast 8tb capacity. Raid 1 also worked great with mirrored 4tbs, I even removed a drive to get a failure and that drive light flashed to show failure though the other worked perfectly, I then powered down put the drive back in and it rebuilt with no problem, though very time consuming , but this is common with all raid 1 setups , typically around 2.5 hours per TB , I tried single and dual drive in Jbod mode with no issues ... Just remember when going over 2tb to initialize the partition as gpt and not mbr as mbr has a 2tb limit and gpt is limitless..
This is a great little compact unit and I have only Pros, NO cons ...

Is the enclosure supported by debian linux? i've already purchased another one that is only recognized in windows.

I use 2 500 gig drives reading as one terabyte no problems
