The Action of Subtraction (Math Is CATegorical ®)

This was a great interactive read aloud, where the story rhymed and I had my students help me solve the math problems as I read along.

Happy to buy this after reading the Kindle unlimited version it's awesome for kids and my daughter thought it was fun!

How do I love the "CATegorical" series by Brian P. Cleary? I could add up the ways for you, but this particular book is about subtraction . . . and it's a hoot!What is so delightful about "The Action of Subtraction" is that it presents a mathematical concept to children with both uproarious verse and witty illustrations; these work together to bring the dreariness of math into the light in a way that completely engages my four-year-old. Together with its partner book, "The Mission of Addition," Mr. Cleary and illustrator Brian Gable have contributed a true treasure trove for two foundations of mathematic education. This math-o-phobic mom appreciates that immensely.Again, this book is about ideas. It is not a workbook or activity book in any sense. It is not a math textbook for the pre-K - K crowd. BUT, it is the kind of book that makes great storytime reading -- whether mid-day or bedtime. My child loves these books!

During my practice teaching I used a lot of children literature to bring out concepts I wanted to teach. The Action of subtraction was amazing and my second graders picked up the meaning of subtraction right away.

I think this book is cute to use when introducing subtraction to children in grade school. I read to my students and they loved it.

My students love these books; holds their interest; and it has a thematic context, because it benefits their ELA skills as well as their math.

I like the mathematical vocabulary used in this book. Good to use in combination with other subtraction books and stories to consolidate knowledge of subtraction.
