Habitat: Vernacular Architecture for a Changing Planet

This book is stunning. The scope of what the many contributors try to analyze and make accessible for practical knowledge and use is staggering. Every major climate zone is represented, but so is the changeability of those climate zones. Every type of architecture is treated with dignity. I’ve been looking for a comprehensive book about vernacular architecture for a while with no success, but I feel like this book, with its balance of essays and illustrations, photos and diagrams, is just the in-depth resource I needed.However, be aware that this thing is a tome. It’s huge: coffee table book big in cover dimensions, textbook big in thickness. It really is nearly 10 lbs. and 600 pages (they didn’t skimp on paper quality, by the way; it’s very nice!). So don’t buy this for a handbook or something to take to class. But do buy it as a useful reference and representation of some really great research.
