Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing Through 2016

Outstanding book. Far better explanations than the legalese the actual rules are written in, and lots of good cases to further show how the rules apply in many common situations. It would be a lot more useful if this book itself was just used as THE racing rules. Parts of the actual RRS are beyond difficult to understand (there's as much in what's not written, as what is written - that's nonsense). The fact that there are several books that have been regularly published for decades to explain the actual rules, is a good indication how user unfriendly the actual rules are...

This book has the most logical thought path to walk you thru the rules of sailboat racing...it's the only one out there worth buying...the rest try to go thru the rules by rule number while this one is more oriented to actions you will encounter out on the water. It's full of small sketches to describe boat position etc. so there is no confusion as to what is meant and it tells you when a definition used is not the same as used in everyday "boatspeak". Just a real great book for understanding the detail of what is behind the rule.

As a race committee chairman I used this book last night to help understand what rules applied to a situation and how to apply the rule. I've used the previous edition many times so buying the current version was a quick decision. The explanations are clear and the diagrams are of great help. It is easy to find what you need to review. I've recommended it to the members of our club to help them get a better understanding of the rules. I even took it on vacation and read it sitting on the beach!

The author of this book is choosing his words so well that the Racing Rules of Sailing are simple and clear brought to the reader which has only time for one book. But after reading this he understands the rules. Also the rule changes accepted by the ISAF and applicable after januari 1 2013 are well brought forward in the style in which Dave Perry is the master.

it's fun enough to keep reading after you would normally be put to sleep.More importantly, it gives you tactical direction for critical points on the course.You get much more than an opportunity to understand the rules, but how to apply them to not only keep you out of trouble, but to leverage your advantage to better finishes.

The examples and graphics do a very good job of clarifying sometimes cryptic language. It also highlights some situations that might not otherwise be obvious. I always have a copy for review and onboard for racing.

Dave Perry is a master at untangling the intricate details of the Yacht Racing Rules.His interpretations are the Bible to take with you to any protest committee meeting,regardless of whether you are the protester or the protestee.

Excellent discussion of somewhat complex topics. It does a great job at connecting the proverbial dots. Excellent companion to the formal rules.

It 's my second book by Dave Perry about RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing sailing are changed every four years), so I am not surprised to be just as satisfied.I like it since, among others on the same subject, the author proves himself capable to go "straight to the point", without omitting any essential element.Although the reading is somewhat technical, the book can be recommended both to those who, as beginners tired of trying to understand the rulebook, just want to get the full picture well focussed, both to professionals, technicians or race judges whishing to go deeper into the argument.

A very thorough run through the racing rules. The rules always look simple until you use them. This book takes the reader through the complexities in a very straightforward way. There are some clever cartoon-style illustrations which entertain as well as inform.using this technique makes the rules a less dry and dusty subject to read. Strongly recommended.

Best explanation of the racing rules I have seen. Well written and well conceived. A great resource for competitive sailors.
