Don't judge a book by its cover.
It's an excellent book. It's probably the best book ever written on Bushido. It's factual, well written, based on very serious academic research...Forget all other books, if you want to understand what Bushido means, that's the very first book you should read.

A must have!!
Another great book from Dr. Bennett that explores and explains the Japanese world and philosophy of Bushido and it's shaping of the Samurai throughout time.

Finally a serious book on the subject.
I'm very pleased with the purchase and the content.Despite its somewhat unfortunate cover, this book is bound to become a classic on many shelves around the world. It's because it deals with Bushido and the values of the Bushi in a factual way and doesn't drift on to speculation like so many others do.If this is the first book someone picks up on the subject, they may find that it may be the only one they need.

All the information, none of the boredom.
I have a couple of books by this author and his writing is always good; informative without being dry and academic, with an occasional injection of dry Kiwi wit for good measure. This book is no exception, it is simply superb. It is rare to find anything written about Bushido that is neither a manifesto of Japanese racial/cultural superiority or obsequious fawning by a foreign romanticist, but this book completely avoids either of those traps. It gives a well-balanced view of Bushido in both the historical sense and the way in which it can be taught by, and applied in, the modern Budo. It admires where admiration is warranted, and it criticizes where criticism is due. When I am reading I make a habit of putting sticky tabs on the pages where a piece of information or a passage really grabs my attention and makes me want to research it more at a later date. I am into the final quarter of this book now and I have used up two packs of tabs already. It is that good. Do yourself a favour, order it.
