Bach: Sonatas for Flute and Piano, Volume 2

Beautiful
These may not be scholastic, but I appreciate the voicings and the 'lie' of the keyboard parts. Harmonies are usually spot on; I change only a couple.

Don't go there
This is not the kind of edition you want of Bach's music. It is not a scholarly edition and you cannot tell what the composer wrote. A good edition takes into careful account the sources, autograph and non-autograph. There is an autograph for the sonatas in B-minor and A-major, the latter with Bach's enormous excision (and nothing to replace it extant) in the movement. Neither is the original version of the piece. For the e minor sonata and the E major sonata there are no autographs, but reasonable copies, though the sources for the e minor sonata don't always agree. Editions should not be made from other people's editions. They should be made by scholars who know what they are doing from the original documents. It is a bad sign that the word "piano" appears on this. For sonatas with basso continuo there should be all the figures (already an issue in the continuo sonata in e minor and E major, and one of the main sources for the e minor sonata is unfigured.) It should provide a good realization that doesn't get in the way of the flute/bass duo texture, and preferably a way to get rid of it. It should provide notes on the sources and editorial issues. This is very complex music, especially the sonata in b minor. Addendum: this review is for both volumes. The other issue is that the g-minor sonata is unlikely to be by J. S. Bach and there are serious doubts about the C major and E-flat major sonatas. They are not accepted as authentic by the Neue Bach-Ausgabe.
