building a giant!
Regarding the delivery: the product was before the promised time and was neatly packed.Regarding the book:with the curiosity that how could such a big private empire could be build in a country like china with excessive state control, I ordered the book to know what went into the making of the giant. The price paid is totally worth as the author clearly accounts of the historical development of the company and the IT sector. the book is a good read to people of 21st century whose childhood and the development of the sector coincided. As all great stories, this also serves as a great inspiration for entrepreneurs on how to fight the industry giants by getting the basics right and being local.

Book loses Focus. It is more about development of Chinese E commerce that Alibaba and Jack ma.
The story of Jack ma is Inspiring but the book is not well structured and loses its focus in explaining the development of Chinese E commerce business. The book doesn't focus on Jack ma as much as it should. I personally find the Speeches of Jack more motivating. The hardcover book is ofcourse great to read. Delivery and Amazon services are as usual Mind-blowing.

Insightful and precise
I’ve been eyeing this book for a while now. The very first chapter clearly gives out a disclaimer (and it is obvious from the cover). This is a biography. Written by a third person. Direct quotes from Jack Ma are often the narration. Yes it does glorify Jack and some would argue, rightly so his achievements. And yes it does pose some questions which to this day have been unanswered. There are a lot of “I didn’t know that” moment so. The most interesting bits of information are tucked in footnotes. As y9u progress through the book the res at least 1 footnote per page. This adds relevant details to the chapters. The only thing that seems to be missing is the “inside view”.

Reads like an essay that is out to idealize Jack Ma ...
Poorly written book. Reads like an essay that is out to idealize Jack Ma and Alibaba without giving a peek into the struggles and anecdotes that are part of a journey in building a great company.

Good account of Jack Ma's personality traits and their origins.
I like that this book showed the account of how Jack Ma's personality has shaped through the course of his life and how you are able to put a pin on his principles in life and business. I do not however like how the book was written, continuous future and past accounts, kind of gets confusing at times. It could have been a bit more streamlined. But nonetheless, I appreciate the author in going into great details.

Alibaba , China and E-commerce.
It's a great book. Insightful. The author did a very good job of keeping the reader engaged. It is a bit harder to keep track of the timeline. The book isn't written in chronological order , like in one chapter many incidents from multiple decades are mentioned to prove a point. That's not completely off putting per se, but rarely cumbersome. There probably isn't a book about Alibaba that isn't written this well. The author lived in China long enough to know and understand the Chinese business , it's people and the government.

Alibaba is a difficult read. It requires discipline to get to the end. For an author who claims to have worked closely with Ma there are very few real insights into how he achieved his success. Surprisingly some of the insights are extracted from public speeches made by Ma rather than from personal day by day cooperation. Is the dearth of insight due to a privacy agreement between Clarke and Ma?I finished the book feeling that I had worked hard to find out what he had done technically and financially to obtain such amazing sales. I expected more from this self proclaimed adviser to Ma.

Good read
I have been hearing Jack Ma's name pop up in the news quite frequently over the last couple of years. Who is he? What does he do to make himself become a billionaire? You will find the answer in this book. The book provides an account of how Jack Ma built up his company from scratch through strong-will and determination. There was a lot of trial and error along the way. The book provides a fascinating insight into how much change and development China has gone through over the decades. It is not a biography of Jack Ma's life, but more about how he built his company Alibaba.

A great insight into both the charismatic Jack Ma and China's economic boom.
I really appreciated the insight into Jack's Character, his optimism and the way in which his idealistic beliefs have fuelled Alibaba's success. I also gained a better understanding of the rise of the Chinese economy and how local companies such as Alibaba are better suited navigating the political and cultural landscape of China than many foreign competitors. I recommend this book for anybody who wants to know what makes Jack tick and for anybody who wants to understand the differences between tech companies in China and the West. I gave four stars because although the book is written very well and gives a wide range of understanding to Jack and Alibaba, at times I felt that it lacked a bit of direction and it seemed to finish fairly abruptly. still an amazing book and would highly recommend this book for anybody interested in the economy of the east.

A great insight into Alibaba's journey towards success.
A great insight into Alibaba's journey towards success. My students loved this book as part of their summer reading, who are now moving onto "The Everything Store". Thank you Duncan for an engaging read.

A Chinese Internet Guru
I've read a number of books about billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Google guys and this book about Jack Ma has given me a better understanding of where China is in the Internet age. The book is easy to read, the writing style is to the point, the author has painted a great picture of this amazing man.
