Petite Barrelhead Lazy Susan, #2851

I wanted a rustic lazy susan for the center of my round table that was sturdy enough to hold condiments, the water pitcher, the wine, whatever, for outside meals on my deck. So many wooden lazy susans are really big at 22" or more and that was too big for my table. I was elated to find this one which is 16" and just the right size. It is well balanced with a large turning 'platter' underneath that will allow heavy items to sit on the unit and not cause it to tip. That was really important to me given how I expected to use it.After two recent small parties where we all sat at my deck table, I could see how a lazy susan would have made for a lot less passing and getting up to retrieve things as well as adding a charming element to the table decor. The barrelhead type of lazy susan seemed ideal with my wine inspired dishes and my grandmother's grapevine patterned flatware. As you would expect, each barrelhead is different. Mine bears the logo of a barrel maker in France. I did some research on the company and enjoyed reading about how this particular type of oak brings certain qualities to the wine aged in it.Most lazy susans seem to be either huge or too small to be practical, and I worried that some might not have the stability I needed. This one is certainly not cheap, but does not tip even with something heavy on the edge. There is the barrelhead itself, smoothly finished, and then a thin wood disk fastened underneath to which the turning mechanism is attached. The unit is relatively heavy, but turns smoothly. I don't know what the finish is but water beads up on the surface.I'm very satisfied with this purchase as it will be perfect to hold the wine, water, salad dressings, condiments and/or serving bowls on the table within reach of seated guests. It is practical as well as a wonderful conversation piece.
