What a pleasure it is to discover that Amazon carries "kuri yokan" (chestnut bean paste), a quintessential sweet of Japan. Small slices of this bar-shaped log are consumed along with cups of green tea, especially of the thick ceremonial powdered type known as "macha." The Japanese use specially-designed toothpicks to break their tranche into small bites, but, lacking these, miniature forks will do as well. "Yokan," which comes in a variety of flavors, is not meant to serve as a dessert as we know it in the context of a full meal but rather with green tea in a stand-alone presentation.
