Very good
IDK if an $80 version is going to be any better, but I have no issues with my photos and it protects my lens.

If you must, this one is great!
People are often split between "whether or not" when it comes to using such filters (generally, UV/haze) for lens protection. It is rarely about the cost itself (there are many inexpensive ones available) but their impact on quality. Every additional glass will ALWAYS have an effect, also in terms of how much light gets through (the transmissive factor). OTOH, lenses are a lot more expensive and one may be better off guaranteeing as much protection to them as possible. I fall in the latter category, while cautiously acknowledging the former.Hoya UV filters, especially the multi-coated and super-multicoated ones, are excellent. Their adverse effect is minimal (and transmissive properties are among the best as well). And they are often not obscenely priced. I have B+W filters that are pretty good, but they come with a price tag while offering similar qualities. And the slim design of the Hoya filter also got my attention as it was going to be used on the 18-55mm kit lens of my Sony NEX especially considering the wide angle. I have an older version as well used on an older lens, and that is slightly thicker."Hoya Multi-coated", among the best in UV protection (but then, not the key for digital sensors), among the best in transmissive factor (over 95% of the light gets thru), and protects the lens' front element from the elements. All for a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

Got this after a tip from an online forum - best advice I ever took!
This little filter was made with witchcraft. It is fantastic at bringing more clarity, color richness, and tone to my images. It basically lives on my 35mm prime lens. I plan to get other sizes for my other lenses.Great filter for the money. Doubt you could be disappointed with this purchase.

it fits the fujifilm x100s without an adapter.
I posed a question before purchasing. I wanted to know if it would fit my new Fujifilm x100s. I got one "yes", two "no" and one "maybe" i bought it anyway. took the ring off the camera (came that way) and screwed this one on, fits perfectly. no issues at all. I do have to go out and shoot on a sunny day to see the effect of the lens. However I will be traveling and I wanted this largely to protect the lens on the camera. good purchase.update: it does not fit without an adapter. the lens could not move in and out to focus, camera kept malfunctioning due to the filter keeping it from moving outward.

Great optical peformance, Japanese quality, but not the most durable coating
These basic Hoya HMC Slims are the filters to buy if you want good optical performance, don't need to clean your filter very often, and have a limited budget. Unlike most of the Chinese no-name filters, Hoya's quality Japanese glass and coating does a good job at helping the filter disappear optically with a minimum of added flare or other artifacts. The slim ring helps prevent vignetting with wide angle lenses while still accepting a standard lens cap (some "stepped" slim filters have a different diameter outer ring). It's also well machined and doesn't feel like it's going to destroy the plastic threads on the front of your lens like some of the Chinese filters do.The downside to these filters is the coating isn't especially durable, easy to clean, and doesn't repel anything. If those things are important, I'd suggest the B+W "Nano" filters but they're roughly 3 times the price. Hoya also has more expensive options with more durable coatings.

Best quality for the price
It's somewhat hard to consider just how far this product category has leapt in just 10 years. It has a solid build, with a metal ring, presumably aluminium with just the slightest indentations on the top to screw in and out easier, and in the past four months of use, no visible scratches have appeared. The glass is of surprisingly high quality... You might be starting to see a pattern here. There are no major distortions, with the standard benefits of a UV filter. In closing, if you need a filter for less then 50 dollars, this is the one to get.

Nice as a lens protector
I bought my wife a Sony NEX-C3 camera and decided to get her this product as a lens protector. I have heard that sometimes these filters can mess up the quality of a photo. I know there are various filters out there from brands you never heard of. I noticed the Hoya brand seemed to be more legit and had plenty of decent reviews. So far, I cannot say that the lens hinders the photo quality at all. I've tested photo quality with it on and off and I do not notice any difference outdoors or indoors (so maybe that isn't saying much more the UV filter part). So as far as a lens protector, I give it 5 stars.

Cheap insurance and works great!
It’s great on my Fujifilm x100s! I got a ring and hood package and found out that I needed the ring adapter to go on BEFORE this filter. Otherwise it will mess with the autofocus motor. This gives me some peace of mind knowing that a fall will break this filter instead of my expensive lens!

Recomendable.

Great filter.
I lost my original filter, this one from Amazon is just like the one I bought from the camera store. Same packaging, same everything, but a much better price.
