Caprica: Season 1.5 [DVD]

A good piece of Galacticana
I just now finally got to see Caprica. I've watched only the episodes themselves -- I haven't looked at any of the ancillary material yet. I'll get to it someday soon I hope.Everything weighed in, I think it was a pretty good show. Literary types watching probably caught the parallel between Daniel Graystone and Victor Frankenstein. Most people know Frankenstein only from that silly comic-book of a movie Boris Karloff was in in 1932. In Shelley's original novel, VF was a more sympathetic character, with good intentions at heart -- grief drove him to make his creature. Had Mary Shelley lived in the 21st century, she might have written Caprica or something like it.I thought that on the whole it had the BSG mark on it -- no top-down plot, it just sort of...goes. The producers plainly didn't start with a strong plot structure, just themes and ideas they wanted to hit, like they did with BSG. One got a sense that the story wasn't driving toward anything in particular (except of course that it had to end with the Cylons being really, REALLY mad at the Colonists).I thought Caprica well-written and mostly well-acted. Genevieve Buechner, the actress who played Tamara Adama, left me a little cold. I just never quite bought into her portrayal. She seemd to me uninvested in Tamara, like she didn't "get" the girl herself.I thought Caprica gave an interesting look at an advanced and continually advancing technological society, with all that that implies. In our own real world we are faced (whether we know it, whether we admit it) with real and serious questions of the effect of technology on us. If the Capricans should have looked before they leapt, what about us? When the next big thing comes along, will we stop to ask questions? Will we, like the Capricans, find in our midst a monster of our own making and wonder how we came to that? The show had good production values, but the effects at times seemed a little less than real. At times I just didn't quite buy the effects, like they weren't quite finished, maybe, like maybe they were a little rushed...I think this is good character-driven drama and good SF. In what may be a curious irony, it may not be the best light to cast on the BSG universe. I don't know any of the behind-the-scenes history, what went on during the making of the show, or anything like that, so some of my impressions and theories of this may be off, I know.Having said that though I got a sense of the producers rushing through the end of the season, as if they knew the show would end in a few more weeks. It just seemed like an awful lot happened at the end and an awful lot of it was incredibly convenient. Really, a piece of electronic hardware with a terrorist organization's entire plan on it conveniently falling into Graystone's hands, still lying there in a park days later, at the moment it was most needed was an incredibly convenient development. The surprising events with the boy Willie and then the appearance of little Bill during that montage..it seemed they were rushing to tie up loose ends and bridge Caprica with BSG. I have an idea in my mind that Willie was supposed to have a transformative arc over several seasons and they just couldn't fit it in in the shortened time they had, so they engineered a convenient bait-and-switch.None of this is the fault of the producers I think. Suddenly hit late with a cancellation notice (as I suspect is what happened) they maybe went into an emergency crisis mode trying to hit the major plot points they wanted to hit and be able to connect the dots to BSG. The real clue to this was the montage at the end of the final ep. It struck me as a statement of "This is all the stuff we wanted to cover when we thought we'd be on for more than one season." It provides us with the barest bare-bones skeletal structure to enable us to put the two shows together into something resembling a cohesive whole.

Confused adolescent daughter starts galactic size space war
Hey, I bought this series, as Prequel's tend to explain the premise behind the actual series and what the statement's the creators/directors/writers and producers of Space Opera entertainment are attempting to make. Of course this series is not the Battlestar Galactica of the 1978, where the enemy (Cylon's) was created by someone else, and humanity gets into a fight with them, due to an act of kindness. the general premise of the BSG 2004 show is somewhat twisted in that humanity is the creator of the enemy and in this case. The under-currant problem is monotheism Vs polytheism as perceived by adolescent children of wealthy parents, set to the backdrop of a space opera with "ALL!!" the same failings of our own cultures here on earth. If you haven't raised children you will miss the finer point's of the series, as children always think they are right, and that they know Everything!!, until one of their friends go zealot and blow themselves up with plastic explosives over a theological concept that they barely understand. So, Yes this series brings all your favorite cultural problems to life. The premise of the re-boot is weak and hardly original. The series leans heavy on Greek mythology, Astrology and Biblical ideals. But doesn't go as far as dragging the Anunnaki into the mix. But when the young kid blows himself up it smacks of Islamic monotheism at it's worst. Remember this show came out just after the New York Twin-Tower event. All that to one side, the Cylon's appear to be programmed with the mentality and personality of a distraught adolescent girl that has a major grudge against her parent's. Is it any wonder that the Cylon's hate humanity!!. That would make the over all premise of this space opera one of: Confused adolescent daughter starts galactic size space war over ill conceived theological ideals and hatred of her parents. Did Glen Larson really green light this project? Oh and then there is the whole slavery issue.

How about just one joke?
I am a major BSG fan, so of course, Caprica had to got - on import - as soon as I new it was available. My review is of the whole series, 1 and 1.5.First off - it is not BSG, it is a completely stand-alone piece, that could easily exist without BSG ever having been created. It is dark. There is no humour, and this may be part of it's weakness; it makes it hard to feel empathy or sympathy for any of the characters, they are a little 2-dimesional and thoroghly self-obsessed.It is topically American, with the self-conscious themes of terrorism, religious fanatisism, suicide bombers that go to paradise, corporate corruption and mafia-styled gangster.Wow, sounds good doesn't it!There is an overidding feeling of neurosis around all the main characters, which ironically enough, goes some way to adding a little depth to them. However, this is never really explained, and I had the distinct feeling it was the eerie presence of Eric Stolz, both in the character and the direction and script, that gives this feeling. The technology behind the virtual world, the main character's (A teenage girl, Zoe Graystone and her virtual copy Zoe-A) ability to create a perfect virtual clone, and the strange presence of an Angelic version of Zoe - none of these things are ever explained; we are to take it on faith, that Zoe is a genius, and angels exist. Ok, I did; I like Sci Fi, what can I say.Clarice Willow, portrayed by an English actress, has the most depth, and a touch of irony about her - at time she looks like she's stifling a giggle, laughing at the absurdity of the seriousness of the script. She kind of reminded me of the Vicar of Dibley. But still, I did enjoy it - it has a strange, almost gothic eeriness to it, that is quite edgy and compelling. For BSG heads it's a must, as it does show, in detail, the birth of the very first Cylon, and hints towards the creation of the Cylon in human form, the Cylon religion, and so on.Just two minutes of Starbuck, grinning, drinking and cussing, and I'd have given this 4 stars!

4 stars to show, but extremely disappointed that "Season 1.5" was merely what I knew to be the second half of Season 1.
NOTE: This review is aimed at anyone who originally watched Caprica (in Canada) on Netflix (when it was available).I originally watched Caprica Season 1 on Netflix (Canada), and I liked it, so clearly my stars do not reflect my opinion of the show. In any case, after watching Season 1, I went ahead and watched the BSG remake (also a great show, by the way), and after finishing the BSG series, I felt like there was significant gap between Caprica and BSG. For me, a lot of questions remained on exactly how the final events of Caprica amounted into the society of BSG. I thought there was a ton of potential to bridge that gap, so amazon.ca browsing I go and there is (what I think to be) the answers I've been looking for: Caprica Season 1.5! Unfortunately, the Caprica episodes I originally watched on Netflix, labelled "Season 1", were actually in fact the whole series: Season 1 + Season 1.5So, when Season 1.5 arrives (shipping was great as usual), and I open the plastic wrap with much anticipation, as I am super pumped to find out the mysteries of this universe, I notice that the last episode listed is "Apotheosis", which I clearly remembered as the last episode I watched on Netflix. I did not want to believe it; I hopelessly searched Google in hopes that these mysteries I was searching for existed on this DVD as I had hoped ... Nope. This was it. My fault? Yes. Well, at least partly, but in my defence Netflix posted the entire content of the show and labelled it Season 1, not Season 1 + Season 1.5TL;DR - This is a great series; however, if you watched the first season on Netflix and are purchasing this DVD hoping for more, read above.
