Fascinating guide to London's Docklands area
This is a fascinating and well researched book which should be of interest to the huge community who now live and work in the modern Docklands. The historical story of the extensive area of Docklands and of the many individual docks is told from Roman times to the modern bustling community of gleaming skyscrapers and fashionable restaurants, which is less than forty years old.As well as providing an excellent history, the book is also a tourist guide with details of "what to see" related to the historical background. This inexpensive and detailed book is recommended to the many thousands of people who live and work in the modern Docklands and would like to know more about how it came to fruition.

Get this book!
If you are interested in the history of London trade, get this book. It is very well researched and answered many questions I had about the docks of London and their development. Also check out Geoff Marshall's youtube channel about trains and the London underground. Fun and very informative!

An easy to follow and digest book on Docklands.
I first came across Geoff Marshall's books when I read London's Industriall Heritage. Being a 'Northener' I'd never thought of London having the north's dark satanic mills. However, the Industrial Heritage book enticed me to buy the 'Docklands' book.It provides a concise guide to this intriguing area of London, which I've tended to ignore preferring Greenwich bank of the Thames. This book has changed that and I'll be visiting the north bank and using this guide when I next go down river.

Great book!
This book is divided into 10 routes giving a comprehensive insight to the history of the docklands. With a good selection of black and white and colour photographs this book allows you to have a good idea of what the London Docklands had and now currently looks like. It is a well structured book which gives you a great insight into the social and economic context of the docklands. It's definitely a book I'd recommend!

No map so no point
Content is fairly standard and okay but the lack of maps makes the book frustrating and in this context, to compare the old layout of docks with the new, makes the book pretty pointless.

"Introduction to a fascinating area of London"
Book is structured around ten walks around a fascinating area of London. Three introductory chapters give the historical, social and economic context in a reasonably light manner. I particularly liked the role that a flock of sheep and a swarm of bees played in the opening of Canary Wharf. Another reader complained about the lack of maps. These would have been nice, but I didn't find it too difficult to follow descriptions using an A-Z. The photos, many in colour, whet one's appetite for further exploration.
