If you love Science Fiction, you will love this movie! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Odd but fun film. *by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2018* I think the thing to remember about this film that most people seem to be upset about; its not actually all that action PACKED. It is primarily an odd story about a couple of brothers and their run in with some nasty criminal characters, and yes it's almost entirely due to one of them being pretty dumb. He gets in way over his head and has really no choice but to drag his kid brother along for the ride. That's the primary story at play here, they just dropped a full on plasma rifle into the middle of it to kick it on its head. There's an excellent sense of escalation and even suspense involved, but in order to even make it to the plasma rifle's first firing you'll have to sit through a goodly chunk of the film. I get why this upset some viewers, but I found this approach refreshing. It allowed me to get invested in the characters and main story before the sheer chaos began. It's fairly gritty, and more than a little sad, but also full of humor and touching moments. If you allow yourself to care about the characters more than the rifle. I feel like that's pretty important.Every role is well acted, especially the mains, and James Franco clearly enjoys this kind of role because he shines as usual. Loads of fun to watch. The weapon itself is also a well crafted and written item, with satisfying action and a decent (if somewhat cryptic) explanation.Side note: I call it a Plasma Rifle, but the film never actually identifies it. It behaves in a certain way that makes me think "that's what a rifle firing bolts of magnetically contained plasma might do in real life" so that's just what my mind ran with.In summation, if you're on the fence about this one...yeah I'd say give it a shot. Just be properly patient with it, and treat it as more than just a mindless action flick in order to get the most from it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars It has a lot more art than plot, but I like it *by A***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2020* This movie made me uncomfortable in a lot of ways because I super enjoy the characters of this movie but I also saw the pain and the sadness that surrounds it as something super heavy. Too heavy for what its poster suggests. I think this should've been an R-rated movie rather than a 2013 movie. I also think they should've been a bit more forthcoming with the Sci-Fi elements and weave the grit, family, and down-to-earth themes throughout the movie in the background.But damn did I enjoy it anyway. I enjoyed Eli's growth through this film. I enjoy his bigger white brother even if he's an idiot. I enjoy our girl Zoe's role as an older sister to Eli. And I wished this movie was way more successful.
