Bought twice because it's loved that much ♡
I bought this originally years ago, like 2018 at the latest (2015, 2016 at the earliest?), I think. My family and friends really enjoy the show, especially the episodes directed by Miyazaki. Mrs Hudson is a real stand-out through the whole thing. We personally didn't like the English dub voices available in this copy (which is saying something because we do tend to prefers dub voices to sub in my family; we like knowing what words are being stressed when, and we are tragically monolingual), and were glad there was a subtitle and Japanese sub option! It's a very loved DVD set in my collection. However, one of my little sisters really fell in love with this series and has been off in college for a bit and is about to be at that awkward in-between of "got my bachelors degree finished, waiting to get a job somewhere". Since we don't know when we'll see each other next year, assuming she gets a job by then and not knowing if she'll get time off to come home, I thought she'd appreciate her own copies of her favorite DVDs to borrow from me. She isn't a huge movie/TV fan, she can count on one or two hands all the movie/TV properties she could ever want a physical copy of (and also she doesn't much care for streaming media either); and multiple of those properties are stuff she has only seen because I own them on DVD. This series being one of them. So I am getting my sister all her own copies of her favorite media from my collection, so she can take them with her wherever she ends up and not be confined to experiencing them only when she comes to see me (or I see her AND I bring said DVDs with me to her) now that the once-promised holiday breaks to come visit from her college days are no longer a guaranteed time-off.I know there is also a Bluray collection version of this series. But I also know my sister is unlikely to always remember "Blurays don't play in DVD-players; only the reverse is true where DVDs play in Bluray-players" (hence, my personal preference for DVDs and DVD+Bluray sets). So I wanted her to have this specific copy to ensure, no matter what player she has, she can watch this show. Plus, this is the box-set and cover design she has all this associated... nostalgia(?) for, for lack of a better term. It's the familar design to remind her of home. So, for any Sherlock Hound enjoyers looking for a deciding vote between this DVD set and the Bluray set out there: I would assume the Bluray has more special features(?) and is therefore more bang for your buck. The reason I bought the DVD set in the past is because it was the only version available then, and the reason I buy it again now is entirely personal to my sister and her memories of familiarity towards my pre-existing one. Though I do highly recommend the series, I will not push you this way or that between the different ways to own a physical copy of this series. Both times I bought this series, the box came in wonderful condition. It's barely stiffer than paper and is easy to bend, so for both times it to come in such good condition is wonderful. The DVDs inside are also just fine. There's basically no special features in this set. My only real compliant is that, in the brief interim that my family and I tried the English dub, that we never got to hear the English Sherlock Hound theme-song that I know exists (here is the youtube link to it if Amazon allows: youtu.be/Zhx7UZMq0OI?si=wHODaZe9CfLu2bCg). The English theme-song we did hear from the DVD was much more lackluster in comparison. It makes me wonder if there is a second English dub than the one featured in this set? Or did the better theme-song get added later than we were willing to venture? I'm unsure. But that doesn't impact the episodes quality. They're all still fun, especially the Miyazaki-directed episodes or any episode focused on Mrs Hudson. I don't think there's been any edits to the material as far as I am aware.Regardless of how you purchase it as a DVD or Bluray, all in all, I do recommend owning this series. And I am very glad I was able to snag a second one to gift my little sister during the Christmas of her last college-sanctioned winter-break ♡

A really cute show for people of all ages! Be aware: Amazon has some misleading product information!
I discovered this show when I was going through some old tapes (younger people have a tendency to call them "VHS," but nobody I ever knew as a kid in the 1990s called them anything but "tapes" or "videos.") and I came across a tape I remember particularly enjoying as a kid of a show called "Rude Dog and the Dweebs," so I watched this tape and at the end of the video there's a bunch of advertisements for other shows released through Celebrity Home Entertainment's "Just For Kids" line of videos and this was a tape from like, 1990 or 1991 and a lot of the shows they were pushing were anime. There was one for a Dutch-Japanese co-production called Ox Tales and another for a Belgian-Japanese co-production called "Wowser." But at the very end of the tape, which I must never have bothered to watch as a kid, is a promo for this show, Sherlock Hound and for some odd reason that one piqued my interest and I looked it up and decided to order this DVD set.The first thing you might have noticed that a lot of other reviewers are saying is that unlike the product description for this show as listed by Amazon which says this DVD set has eight discs, the set in fact only has six. There's only twenty six episodes in the entire series, and they're spread out across six discs, so if you order this and get a DVD set with only six discs, don't panic, that's the way it's supposed to be. It even says on the actual front cover of the DVD set "on 6 discs," I have no idea where Amazon got the idea that there were eight. The series itself comes in a very nice DVD container with layered grooves for each disc and a plastic "page" with the third and fourth disc on it. It has a nice cardboard sleeve that goes around the DVD case with the same artwork, just a little bit more detailed, it's designed to look like a leather bound book that the title character might be seen reading. The show may have been made for kids, but this set was designed with grown ups focusing on nostalgia in mind! The show is delightfully cute, it's basically just a series of simple mystery stories set up to be solved by Sherlock and Watson, sometimes with the aid of their friends, like Mrs. Watson and the chief of Scotland Yard. But they're all like, anthropomorphic dog people. The mysteries are usually the work of Moriarty, who is depicted in this show as an incompetent, bumbling idiot who happens to have access to steampunk gadgets probably due to his having too much time on his hands. These mysteries are always thwarted by Sherlock and his friends. The show is just really cute and fun to watch and it's appropriate for all ages. There are a few outdated cultural references, but this show originally aired between 1984 and 1985 so you're going to come across stuff like that more and more the further back you go, but I didn't find any of this to be intentionally offensive. Frankly the most offensive thing about this series is the price tag on the DVD set! It must be going out of print or something, so I'm glad I got a copy while I still could. Anyway, whether you're an adult seeking nostalgia or you want to put something fun on for the kids, I'd highly recommend "Sherlock Hound!"

Fun for all ages.
6 discs and not 8 as described. You can't watch English dubbed with English subs. Only English subs in the Japanese dub. The 1200 minutes in the description likely counts the English dub and the Japanese dub/Eng sub versions as separate episodes. Miyazaki had a hand in helping create this series. It's what caught my interest. I did not grow up watching this although I'm old enough. I believe he helped write and direct the first 6 or so episodes according to something I read online. The show certainly "feels" like Miyazaki in some ways. Not just some of the weird steampunk inventions you'd see in Miyazaki's movies...but the way some of the action sequences are handled too. Many of the episodes are self-contained although small events are sometimes referenced in other episodes. My fiancé is a big Sherlock fan. Our favorite version is The Grenada version with Jeremy Brett. Sherlock Hound is simpler. It definitely strays from the stories although you can find similar themes loosely interpreted in a few of them. This is a great set that's fun for all ages. My gal says she wishes Mrs. Hudson and Inspector Lestrade felt more like the books as with other Sherlock interpretations but I still enjoyed them. Not really a series to get serious over (I mean...they are all dogs. ha.). It's just lots of fun...and surprisingly really funny in some moments. I can recommend this set to anyone interested in this genre of animation. The series is available to watch in a few spots online (but you'll have to suffer advertising) so you can make sure you like it before adding it to your collection.

Miserables Bild

A timeless classic!
I found the series on Youtube, but I decided to buy my own copy just in case Youtube's policies change.Directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, Sherlock Hound is a reimagining of the original novels using cartoon animals. This is a good series to show your kids. While the action often gets wild (Characters shoot real guns, people are abducted, villains use actual explosives, planes crash and violently explode, three people are trapped in a wrecked ship that rapidly sinks beneath the waves, for example,) no one dies or is seriously injured - or even shot for that matter; the bullets hit literally everything else except living targets. The hand-drawn animation is wonderful and vibrant -- as expected by Miyazaki's team, -- matching the lighthearted slapstick that permeates each episode. The only downside is that with 26 episodes, you could be done the series in less than two weeks!I heartily recommend this to any classic cartoon/animation fan!

Genial

At last
At last, the Japanese version has arrived! Or so I thought...As a long time fan of Sherlock Hound, or Great Detective Holmes as it is known in Japan, I was delighted to hear that the UK version was being released. The story follows the young sleuth and his cumbersome but loyal friend Watson, as they attempt to solve a number of cases which often lead them to their arch-rival, Moriarty. Typical of Miyazaki's trend at the time, the show is very fast-paced, colourful and does not at all take itself seriously.A few months ago, an almost identical boxset was released (by Manga Home Entertainment) with one notable, yet disappointing, difference: the English dubbing. Not that I doubt the quality of the English/American narration, but I feel the Japanese voice actors are much more suited to this Lupin-esque comedy/adventure, and despite the obvious British settings, the original voices were clearly developed to fit the mould of Miyazaki's anthropomorphic cast.HOWEVER, a mistake was made with item description, and despite being told otherwise by Amazon, a Japanese dub is not available within the UK. After sending a complaint, Amazon dealt with the situation promptly and professionally, and updated the specification details.Fortunately, the English dub is not terrible, and the superbly low price also deserves a mention (and perhaps makes up for the wait - it was released in America 8 years ago!). However, the main downside for me is the poor lip-syncing and English script, which is not only patronizing but also detracts from the characters' appeal. Apparently, the original story was developed with the English dubbing in mind, but I find this hard to believe when the Japanese dubbing fits so clearly with the animation.Nevertheless, for those who love steampunk and Miyazaki's mould-breaking characters, or those just interested in light-hearted adventure, this will surely entertain.(If you are looking for a Japanese dub, try Amazon JP - there is a new version being released at the beginning of next year. Also, a lot of Ghibli/Miyazaki/Takahata films released in Japan also include English subtitles! Another option might be to buy the R1 version of the series which was released in America, but these are fetching a high price now, and you would need a R1 or multi-region DVD player.)
