Jeff Wayne's The War of The Worlds: The Musical Drama: An Audible Original Drama

This is simply horrific, no other word for it
I fear Mr. Wayne has fallen right off the deep end and into a place of no return. I thought the new generation War of the Worlds musical was bad enough, but this horrendous experience takes it so far beyond that it's just not funny. 5 Hours of over acted hammy drama, combined with various remixed disco tech renditions of the beloved music from the 70s, it's just too much. The tripods walking along sound like really badly designed powerloader robots from the Aliens films and honestly I had to keep skipping bits of this as I'd started to pass out from rage and despair. There is a lot more Welsh jabbering and whispering from the Martians for anyone who's read my previous review of the new generation war of the worlds. There are so many scenes where characters just talk about things whilst the music plays in the background like they're listening to it on the radio. The point of the music was that it worked as a stand alone piece. Trying to stretch 2 hours of music into over 5 hours and then having it just warble along whilst people go about their daily business is sonically terrible. Someone has clearly tried to write the script in the style of the original book and I suppose it's just possible that if they'd made a proper drama without the music it might have worked. AS it is, it's a huge flabby long over acted bad mess. I loved the version from the 70s as I have said. I loved the remastered 5.1 version. This, I hate and I am really sad that Mr. Wayne keeps spinning it for more and more and more money. It is but a poor broken shadow of itself. If you want a proper good, faithful and scary dramatisation of the story, check out Sherwood sounds creation, that is what real drama should sound like.

Another flawed masterpiece.
Sound editing at times is crude. Almost like bits of the music we’re just stitched in with no fade or blending. Also removal of the songs makes it less than it should have been. While Jeff Wayne is a brilliant musician both this and the stage show don’t quite hit the right note. Remix this properly, add the songs back in and wow, what a hit it would be.

Enjoyable mix of the familiar and the new.
Enjoyed it a lot. A nice hybrid of the MusicaL Version and an audio book version of the original story. It's not just the Musical Version with extra narration it's something new which I appreciate a lot.

Perfection
Having been a fan of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds since 1978, owning various LP's CD's of the original and the new generation version. I would say that this Audible Drama is for myself perfection

Enjoyable
Probably not for the purists, but still a great listen. Would recommend to anyone who just wants to chillout and have a different version of this truly great story. Michael Sheen and the cast are fantastic!
