Lucid writing, well researched, fine print
The writing is lucid and often quotes Babur’s memoir coupled with Professor Dale’s comments and interpretations making it a compelling read. The book details Babur’s life right from when he assumed the kingship of his native city to his obsession with symmetry, his experience of losing-gaining territories, endless number of celebrations and his campaign in India. However, if the book was provided with a list of characters with a brief description,it would have made it easier to transverse through the many people Babur met throughout his life. Even though the book is provided with a glossary, the meaning of some of the Persian words was missing, adding to the confusion. Finally, a bigger font would have eased the reading process.Nonetheless, the book is extremely well researched with informative endnotes, and promises to enlighten the reader on every aspect of Babur’s rule and personality.

My review
I highly enjoyed reading this biography of Babur. The book heavily draws from the famous Baburnama or the Vaqayi. The book explores the career of Babur as well as the many elements of his life which is often overlooked, such as his interest and pursuits in literature, poetry, and construction of beautiful gardens. One of the striking elements of this book is that the author provides an intimate portrayal of Babur, placing an emphasis on the Perso - Islamic cultural influences which had shaped Babur's personality as a civilised and highly cultural Tumurid. Moreover the book also brings forth a more humane portrayal of Babur, exhibiting his deep emotions as an individual, yearning for the company of his companions and family, his desire to engage in Suhbatarayahq (social gatherings) his feelings of exile, as well as his yearning for melons from Kabul!! If you are interested in Babur and the Timurids, this is certainly a book which you would want to read!
