Excellent overview of concept of 'intangible heritage'
This is a very thorough introduction to the concept of 'intangible heritage'. It is a bit hard to read because each chapter has a different style, being written by another scholar from within different contexts and cultures. But it is certainly rewarding when you do the effort. The chapters about the Intangible Heritage Convention of UNESCO are testimonies by the people who were involved. They manage to provide an excellent overview of the many debates surrounding the convention and intangible heritage. Many issues are still not entirely solved and this book provides a very good basis for further thinking and discussing. The other chapters illustrate a series of these issues, each from another environment and written by someone with direct experience.Thinking about intangible heritage will be subject to much evolution in the years to come. It has the potential of forcing a profound revision of how we think about heritage in general. This book provides many clues and directions for such a new vision.
