An in depth look into this famous standoff between an extremist and the government
This case has gained its notoriety within the annals of extremists, supremacists, religious zealots, and militias alike, pitted against their greatest foe of all, the government. The reader will see how Randy Weaver wound up in this position and how it all plays out. Then you will be able to have a quantified opinion as to whether the government over reached and flexed their authority as is the generally accepted view within their community, or took the appropriate and necessary action. A must read for history buffs.

If you get wound up by reading of corrupt or dishonest LEO -
Most students of history know it takes years for events to become fully known with regard to facts of what happened.so it is with Ruby Ridge - the LEOs set up a sting by getting Weaver to sell an illegal shotgun.the rest is history.Same thing with WACO Texas.the Law Enforcement is YOU WILL BEND TO OUR WILL or WE WILL CRUSH YOU.lots of dead bodies to substantiateLots of info in the book regarding details what happened that "the media" did not bother to publish

The book was very informative, well written, and was fair to all parties involved in the Ruby Ridge tragedy. If you are eager to learn more about this debacle and the subsequent government cover-up, this is the book to read.

Disturbing and Important
The book is both disturbing and important. It traces the tragedy of Ruby Ridge, Idaho from the very beginning, even before Idaho. It profiles Randy and Vicki Weaver when they first meant and follows through their marriage, their children and their move to Idaho. It explores their different beliefs in depth and both their problems and triumphs throughout their marriage. It explains how the U.S. Marshall Service and the ATF first noticed Randy Weaver and why they were interested in him. Did they initially set him up? It explains what the reaction of the FBI was when they were called to the scene. How the government agencies invovled escalated the problem to a new level. How the lack of communication within the government made a bad situation worse. It follows the aftermath of the seige and the shootings into the evidence gathering stage and through the trial. It follows the survivors and what they have become, their tribulations. This is a very important book for everyone to read. It is about lack of tolerance in others beliefs. About the governments miscommunications and lack of sharing information between departments. This has been going on for years, way before 9-11. It delves into the fact that government agencies don't like to admit they were wrong and will sacrifice the little guy to protect the big guy. It show that there is hard working decent people working for the government as well as complete self serving, intolerant, career mongers looking for nothing but advancement and the connections to insulate themselves from the decisions they've made.Randy Weaver and his family thought differently than many. They wanted to be left alone. And they were pushed and pushed to the breaking point. Attacked and surrounded and attacked again. The Weaver's paid the price for their beliefs but the government agents that overstepped their bounds have never been brought to justice or even held accountable with more than meager 15 day suspensions. The courts felt the government wrong enough to award a monetary settlement to the Weaver's. When will the total truth come out? This is an excellent book full of information and presented well. It is engrossing and pulls you in from the beginning. It reads well. I recommend it to everyone.

Not for just any reader
I love Jess Walter as a writer. I found him first as the author of a short story in Esquire and then bought a few books by him. One was a short story book which I have read and reread just to re-experience his wonderful writing and storytelling. I purchased Ruby Ridge first and foremost because he wrote the book. I also was interested in finding out more about this event and how it may have forecast other situations of its type. The book started interesting enough. The first chapter is a short passage of the immediate aftermath of the standoff. The book then goes back to the origins of Randy and Vicki Weaver, their religious evolution, and their families and friends in Iowa. This part I found very interesting - the ins and outs of family member history and the seeds planted that led to what Vicki and Randy became. I even enjoyed the chapters about their early years in Idaho. But at the point where the FBI becomes more and more interested in Randy and Vicki as forces they need to reckon with, I lost interest. And I'm not sure exactly why. I know that I am not particularly religious - certainly not to the extent to which these folks were - and I grew tired of the relentless coverage of how their religion drove them to their expected end. I ultimately found the reporting of the years of FBI investigation wearying and detailed. I grew tired of the Weavers themselves - their fears, the militarization of their children, etc.One recommendation for this book is that it was incredibly well researched - and it is clear that Mr. Walter did just that. The book is very very detailed and for that, it's an important book. But ultimately the details wore me down and I did not finish it.
