Great grinder
There are only 2 high-end pepper mills a home cook needs to consider. They are the Unicorn Magnum and the Peugeot Paris U'Select. In short, the Magnum is perfect for any home cook. You only need the U'Select if you routinely prefer its select-a-grind or design. They're both lovely, and will make you very happy.Features of the Unicorn Magnum:Made of black plastic. It looks great in any kitchen. It will survive lots of casual abuse. Just don't smack it hard on tile or granite, and it will hold up a long time.Holds a boatload of peppercorns. Most mills have a ~1" wide channel to hold peppercorns. In the Magnum, the whole outer casing is hollow. This is maximum storage.Gigantic grind. The 9/inch Magnum has a gigantic metal burr, meaning you can feed any number of people quickly even if you want a fine grind.Easy to adjust. Turn the adjuster screw on the bottom, try a test grind, repeat until you have a setting you like. You'll eventually learn partial adjustments if you need to change. There's no indicator of where you're stopped, so you always have to do a test grind to check where you left of - if you change. When you select one grind all the time (coarse for cooking) you never have to worry.Easily loads using the side hole. Some people claim it's easy to spill all the peppercorns. This shouldn't be an issue. Hold the grinder on the bottom and the twist top, and you'll never have an issue.Features of the Peugeot U'Select:Made of stained, polished wood. The Peugeot is gorgeous. It has a classic look that goes with most kitchens.Select-a-grind. Has labels from a fine grind to coarse. The coarse grind is perfect for grilling and most cooking. The finer grinds are better for eggs and so on - I find a setting of 3 is about right for omelettes. The only problem with the dial is that the fine grind doesn't go to a total powder. I've found for some applications - such as cocktails - I could use one step finer than the dial goes by default. But for most cooking, the dial in fine. The dial is sensitive. You're supposed to use the dial only for changing grinds. I had the misfortune of using the dial all the time while I was grinding until I cracked it. That's my bad, and I retired the Peugeot to my downstairs bar. I'll try to fiddle with the selection to make it a little finer. On the finest grinds, the Peugeot does have a smaller burr, meaning it can take quite a while to make an amount of pepper. If you're like me maybe you just love the gorgeous carved pepper mill, but other people might find it a bother.Overall:If you only need one grind on a regular basis, the Magnum is the best thing out there. Set it and forget it. The large capacity, easy loading, and minimalist looks are perfect for anyone. The Peugeot is a little more fiddly, with a lower capacity and classic looks, but it has the grind selection. Personally, I think I'm moving to Peugeot exclusively. 95% of the time I'm using a coarse grind for cooking. I have a separate grinder at the table for finishing meals, so I no longer need the U'Select. Even if I need a specific grind, I have a mortar and pestle. The Peugeot is lovely, but the Magnum is for me.

I FINALLY FOUND A GREAT PEPPER MILL!! (It really delivers and doesn't break the bank)
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PEPPER MILL I've ever used.I LOVE pepper and use a lot when cooking and to season food on my plate. Over the years we've bought, and 'ground down' dozens of pepper mills and one thing learned early was even metal grinding mechanisms are not all the same. So when our last mill died (to it's credit it did a good, not great job for several years) we did the usual online research and the reviews on the Unicorn Magnum were great. Those reviews were right.I wanted a mill that would grind consistently - most mills quickly fail to effectively and consistently grind pepper. The Unicorn has already proven to be a winner after 2 weeks of hard use. First, it looks good (that's important to my wife and she fully approves of the sleek black look); second, it holds a LOT of pepper; third, it grinds a lot of pepper fast and with little fuss!; and fourth, you can quickly change the size of the granules from big and chunky to quite fine. Personally, I like my pepper fairly granular, not like dust and this really delivers. Also, as I said, I like a lot of pepper and the metal grinding gears really deliver. The Unicorn Magnum feels quite solid in hand while grinding (so many are loose which translates into inconsistent size). This is a pro level grinder in my opinion. Whether you own a restaurant and want your waiter/waitresses to be able to pepper your customer's plate quickly and accurately or to add seasoning when cooking - this is up to the task for delivering fresh ground pepper. If you're a consumer like me and simply want fresh ground pepper NOW, then this is the one. It's priced well and delivers like a much more expensive (and not necessarily better) mill.
