how is new version different from less expensive old version?

Not sure. My machine is fairly new and this is only kit I've used.

Yes it does, I use to work for nespresso, they recommend every 3 months or 300 caps. Especially with the veruto line machines because they can become unusable if not cleaned enough

Nespresso says you should descale your machine every 3-4 months. I had purchased mine in June and just did it in November.
