Beautifully performed and presented
I love this concert series. However this 2018 edition is one of the best. The image clarity and coloration is excellent. The sound is great. Valery Gergiev gives a spirited performance. Anna Netrebko has a gown change for each of her three arias. The Wiener Philharmoniker sounds great and even has a few woman players here and there though not at the number one sees with other major orchestras.

A popular concert offering a highlights of highlights programme. All Regions BD.
Verified Purchase in the UKThis Blu-ray review is based on full surround sound making complete use of the DTS. Master Audio 5.0 option. The first thing to strike one upon viewing is the crisp detail and accurate colours provided visually. The sound, heard in DTS 5.0 on full-range speakers is equally revealing. The concert itself is clearly aimed as an easy listening experience with an overall Italianate flavour predominating. the soprano soloist, Anna Netrebko, and conductor, Valery Gergiev, both have star appeal. Gergiev is also well-known to the Viennese, this being his third such concert and also his 150th appearance with the VPO.As mentioned above, the concert aims for easy appeal and the opening extract of the final glop from the William Tell Overture clearly sets the scene for the whole concert. As a further example, the Aida Triumphal March incorporates two sets of modern fanfare trumpets played of stage for heightened effect. The vocal items sung with full vocal command by Anna Netrebko also reflect her operatic standing and the concert ends on a joyful note with Fucik's Florentine March, more often associated with the Czech orchestras, and Strauss' Wiener Blut Waltz. There were just two surprises for this viewer and they were the lack of subtitles for the, admittedly popular, vocal arias and the rather muted applause which commenced after a respectful pause after all but the final item. On the other hand, subtitles were usefully provided to identify buildings and venues shown by the additional local video footage shown at times during the music.Overall this is a concert designed to maximise pleasure for all with a popular programme performed and recorded to a high standard throughout. It should easily provide enjoyment upon repeat playing for potential purchasers and be well worth considering therefore.
