DID THE JOB FOR 2 MONTHS
I just needed a cheap scanner that would cancel the 'check engine light'. I ordered this, and that is what I got, a cheap scanner that worked for the first 6 weeks that I had it. Simplistic to say the least, plug it into your auto diagnostic port, start the engine, then read the codes, write them down, then go and look them up online, as the codes won't tell you where they originate. It's only useful for getting rid of the codes showing up under the 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON'.Money can be better spent for a way better item than this, as I said, ... won't offer much of any information as to the problems, just gives a code. Some of those I'd even question with using this unit. But I looked them up online, ... managed to remove them from my dashboard, ... that's it. Kind of like buying a magazine, ... only for the free coupon that may be in the back of the pages. Technically speaking, ... unless you want a simple item that will eradicate the codes for a period of 4-6 weeks, ... keep looking. The vehicle I had is sold to a scrap yard, ... would have been nice to put this unit in my garage cabinet for future use, not to be ... not worth the taking up of space for a way better scanner.

Works great for generic codes....
This code reader has performed as well as could be expected, given the price. I used it on my 2001 Cavalier, 2000 Monte Carlo, and 2003 Honda CRV. It had no problem reading codes or turning off the check engine light on any of these three vehicles, but was unable to give a code or description for one out of perhaps four total codes occurring with my Cavalier, although it had no problem at all erasing the mystery code and turning off the check engine light. The code that it was unable to read is most likely Chevrolet specific and was almost positively related to my transmission torque converter or torque converter solenoid, which I'd had come up the week prior when I had the codes read (but they refused to delete) at a local Auto Zone. When I used this item to read the codes, it just gave a readout of "N/A" for this one code, but had no issues when I deleted all codes to get rid of it. It has saved me a whole lot of time and heaps of money by narrowing down what exactly the computer was seeing as problems and I'm very glad I purchased this unit. It feels a little on the cheap side, but does what it was intended to do. My only complaint is it not being able to read the one manufacturer-specific code, but other than that it is a wonderful tool for anyone who is trying to do work on their own vehicle.

works acceptably, instructions terse
Bought this to identify cause of a "check engine" idiot light on my car, a 2001 Subaru Forester. Properly identified error code P0420, which unfortunately can stem from several different potentially expensive problems including the catalytic converter. The terse instructions and the absence of clear reset instructions require some experimentation in order to use, but I was able to turn the check engine light OFF with it. Subsequent scans still say that 1 error code exists; a similar device I gave away was easier to reset and would still trap the error message and make the check engine light go on the NEXT time the operating fault occurs (which can be as simple as the air/fuel ratio being or injectors being temporarily off target). I HOPE that is the condition I left the vehicle in - but can't be sure from the logical loop the directions put you into. INSTRUCTIONS TELL YOU IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO RUN THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE, THAT ALL SCANS CAN BE DONE WITH THE ENGINE OFF. If your purpose is to determine what error code the car's computer is sending before going to a repair facility or doing anything else, this unit and the reference booklet of the codes that comes with it will do the trick. Knowledge is power - and this is $20 worth.

A smile on my face
I am always concerned about buying things when I have no feel for their quality and functionality. So I was greatly pleased when I received my unit, plugged it into my Mazda's port and watched the code pop up on the screen. It makes me ill to think that if I didn't have this great little reader, I would have to spend lots of dollars to go to the dealer so that he can read the exact same codes. This time it was my gas cap, so I could read the code, look up the issues and then delete the code....just as easy as that.I don't know why you wouldn't rate this at five stars if you think it's great and it performed as advertised. I can't speak for it's durability yet but I would have to think I will be getting great service out of this unit since it will only be needed sporadically.Great unit, easy to use and a very reasonable price! The only P.S. I would add is just a reminder to keep those codes and do not delete them if you need to have your car's problem checked by a mechanic as they will aid them in troubleshooting.

Works well on my 2000 Toyota Echo
About the only weakness of my 2000 Toyota Echo is the tendency of the EVAP system to trip the Check Engine light when the engine is under a large load, as when I go uphill with the AC on full blast. It has no effect on the car's performance because the fault is simply a very small leak in the gasoline evaporation control system, but fixing it might prove expensive because of the many inaccessible components strewn between the gas tank forward to the engine compartment. While I am waiting to determine if fixing this fault is worth the money, I can turn off the annoying Check Engine light with this tool as well as read the same EVAP problem codes when the light comes on intermittently from time to time. The price was right, the manual is clearly written, and this tool works very well to read and erase the EVAP codes (and to let me know if there are other codes that would really need attention). It saves me going to my mechanic or to AutoZone to have the Check Engine light and codes reset.

It worked on my Mercedes 2014 CLA180 sports
Bought this to delete the engine warning light. It didn't work at first but when i reattached the plug it was ok. Easy to use with great booklet with full instructions and list of fault codes.
